What a fun and interesting well done podcast.

Seeing how I’m going in tomorrow for a lateral bucket handle tear operation this podcast came at the perfect time. It was great to just hear some medical terms and procedures from professionals.

I think the talk about post op was the best for someone going in for a procedure. As a patient less than 24 hours away from surgery it was so cool to hear professionals talk about the facts for healing and getting back to activities.

    A++++ Thank You

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

173: Anchors Away! Stabilizing the Athlete’s Shoulder
Q: When should we perform remplasage and how has your approach evolved with newer techniques and evidence?
Remplasage is now considered in a broad set of cases, particularly high-risk patients, as level-one evidence shows it reduces recurrence risk; contemporary technique with fiber-tack fixation minimizes motion loss concerns and allows rapid, percutaneous execution, making it a common addition in many patients outside the classic off-track scenario.
173: Anchors Away! Stabilizing the Athlete’s Shoulder
Q: So Kevin, what factors are you weighing deciding on surgical versus non-surgical treatment for a first time shoulder dislocation?
Key determinants include the high risk of recurrence in younger, active patients, especially in collision sports, with age and activity level driving the decision; radiographic bone loss and the size of potential bone defects also influence whether to pursue early stabilization or nonoperative care.
160: Dr. Kevin Farmer on Athletic Shoulder Injuries: From the Sideline to the OR (LIVE at AOSSM 2024)- REBOOT
Q: How do you approach the surgical planning for an athlete with recurrent instability?
I conduct an arthroscopic bankart repair with aggressive fixation strategies, using multiple anchors to ensure stability based on the athlete's positional demands.
160: Dr. Kevin Farmer on Athletic Shoulder Injuries: From the Sideline to the OR (LIVE at AOSSM 2024)- REBOOT
Q: What do you do if an athlete decides to go non-operatively?
I focus on regaining their range of motion and strength, and may use a harness or other protective gear as they return to play.
160: Dr. Kevin Farmer on Athletic Shoulder Injuries: From the Sideline to the OR (LIVE at AOSSM 2024)- REBOOT
Q: How are you counseling this athlete on non-surgical versus surgical treatment?
I discuss the pros and cons, the risks, and the benefits of getting back this season versus waiting until next season, depending on the athlete's individual circumstances.
