  • Moving from She to SHE

I found this to be a relaxed, but informative chat, with Martin Hall able to talk freely but be steered occasionally, and both he and Christian were very easy to listen too. (A lot of practice has gone into being that relaxed on screen or behind a microphone!).

I so agree that there is a great deal of co-operation and collaboration between SHE specialists in the construction industry and long may it continue so.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why All Safety Professionals Should Be in a State of Chronic Unease, with John Barclay
Q: What would you advise an organization to do to take safety more seriously and become more introspective?
First, assess the four fundamental questions about controls—presence, understanding, effectiveness, and adherence—across all work, and involve frontline workers in every stage from planning to verification. Second, shift resources from purely compliance activities to hands-on coaching in the field, ensuring that safety is integrated into daily work rather than treated as a separate policy.
Why All Safety Professionals Should Be in a State of Chronic Unease, with John Barclay
Q: What do you think leaders misunderstand about what caring about safety really requires?
Many leaders genuinely care about their people and want to prevent harm, but they surface-level talk about hazards and rely on checks instead of deeply understanding how energy releases create risk in specific contexts; they fail to involve the workforce in the design of work and the selection of controls, and they don't ensure that controls are both appropriate and truly effective.
Why Your Safety System Might Be Making Things Worse, with Sidney Dekker
Q: Most of the systems seem to work inconsistently or only as a box-ticking exercise—how can we make them work more authentically?
Move past the idea that the system exists for its own sake; make authentic contact with how work actually gets done and design a framework that supports frontline execution, not just auditing or compliance.
Data-Driven Safety: How Leading Organisations Stay Ahead of Risk, With David Picton
Q: What does moving from compliance to data-driven safety actually look like for a typical organization?
It involves creating a data lake from disparate sources, linking training, incidents, weather, and other indicators, and using leading indicators to anticipate and prevent issues rather than just recording what happened. Leadership must fund data visibility projects and insist on actionable insights, not just reports.
You Don't Have a Safety Problem, You Have a Thinking Problem
Q: What practical steps can leaders take to help teams think more clearly under pressure?
Encourage regular breaks, ensure manageable workloads, promote good sleep, facilitate nature time and social connection, and foster a culture that values curiosity and solution-focused thinking.
