  • Great listen for anyone

I know you say it’s not for H&S professionals, but I’ve been really enjoying this. I’m quite isolated in my job and it’s good to have reminders and ideas. I love it. Thank you.

  • Walking in the same steps

This podcast resonates so much with most of my H&S career. It’s down to earth, talks the simple reality of what H&S is in the workplace.

It has made me feel less isolated as I knew, but didn’t that many of us walk the same steps in the journey to improving our workplace Health & Safety. Keep the good work.

  • Awesome!

Great and hugely informative, as someone who has this year undertaken sorting out the workplace H&S after having a piece of machinery blow up in my face because there was literally zero care about H&S, this helps me take in what I'm reading in real world settings and I also feel like I'm not alone in doing this by listening to this podcast!

Cases and own experiences help to bring legislation to life and the natural friendship and synergy between the two of them mean it’s really easy to listen to this like you’re listening to friends chatting. Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Special Episode - Mark Prince: The 6 essential elements, what safety consultants keep secret
Q: So in the book, The 6 essential elements, should we talk through those?
Yes, they originally started with policy, risk assessment and records, then added coordination, competency, and emergency management to create a more complete, practicable framework for small businesses.
The agony aunties of OSH - Easter special
Q: Phil asked what keeps the hosts going despite not being paid and whether Patreon funding covers costs, touching on the sustainability of the show.
They acknowledge the financial realities of running a niche podcast but emphasize passion for health and safety, CPD benefits, and the value of community and mentorship, while noting Patreon funds help cover some costs and enable more episodes.
The agony aunties of OSH - Easter special
Q: Laura asked about a lack of health and safety support in a Northern Ireland quarry, her lone safety rep role, and how to prepare for an upcoming inspection.
They advise formal meetings with the owner to outline gaps, use written records to protect herself, involve external support if needed, and consider audits as opportunities to drive improvements rather than threats, while stressing self-protection and documenting risk.
The agony aunties of OSH - Easter special
Q: Ellie asked for career guidance in health and safety, given her military background but limited local opportunities, and how to balance qualifications with hands-on experience.
The hosts advise pursuing an NVQ Level 6 to demonstrate practical competence at work, emphasize leveraging transferable skills from her military and other roles, encourage mentoring and networking (IOSH, LinkedIn, Patreon communities), and highlight perseverance and proactive CPD as keys to breaking into a larger health and safety team.
The agony aunties of OSH - Easter special
Q: Steve asked whether leaving a fire door wedged open is safer in high-traffic areas than keeping it shut for fire safety, and Daisy argued for having a person at the door to close it if needed.
Steve's question centers on practical risk assessment in a busy hospitality setting; the hosts discuss dynamic risk assessment, the importance of keeping doors accessible for safe egress, and the potential trade-offs between convenience and fire safety, suggesting a live, day-of-incident adjustment rather than a blanket rule.
