  • Simmer’s back!

Was so happy to hear of the launch of this podcast and chose the Ian and LeeVer episode to start. Love Simmer’s broadcasting style and hearing the three of you was like putting on your favourite sweater and sitting in front of the fireplace. Hope the trio will be a semi regular event.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Sens Spotlight #134 - What Should Be Steve Staios’ Top Offseason Priority?
Q: Who do you think would be a good fit as that 40-goal scorer or as a high-impact addition for the top six?
Possible targets discussed include Mason McTavish, Jake DeBrusk, and Jared McCann, with consideration of the fit, contract terms, and whether the player would help push the team over the top, balancing upside with existing core.
Sens Spotlight #134 - What Should Be Steve Staios’ Top Offseason Priority?
Q: So that's, I can relate to like a normal sleep pattern, like habits, like they all return. It's like this new oasis. What do you think maybe is the number one thing that should be on Steve Staios' agenda heading into the draft and free agency?
The dominant takeaway is that adding a top-six winger who can score 40 goals would be ideal, alongside solidifying the blue line and securing a reliable backup goalie. The guest emphasizes the need for a scorer, a dependable top-four defense, and a trusted backup goaltender, while acknowledging the market's uncertainty and Staios' history of surprising moves.
Sens Spotlight #127 - Is Steve Staios Building The Senators The Right Way?
Q: And I just wanted to, you know, kind of make, you talked, it's about kind of decision making and GMs and everything like that. Maybe talk about that and maybe a little bit tied into how you feel about how Steve Staios has done his job as an executive so far in Ottawa.
The guest emphasizes patience, measured leadership, and a clear separation of roles between scouts and management; he highlights Staios's process-driven approach, belief in asset accumulation, and the importance of letting development timelines play out rather than rushing decisions.
Sens Spotlight #126 - Could Claude Giroux Leave The Ottawa Senators?
Q: It's going to be his 20th season in the NHL. Do you think he'll be playing for the Ottawa Senators next year if he's playing in the NHL, Nick?
The players and management are weighing whether Giroux can still maximize a Stanley Cup run with Ottawa, considering injury history, contract structure, family considerations, and whether the team can realistically assemble a competitive top six around him. A move could hinge on whether a better long-term option emerges or if Ottawa can craft a deal that keeps him in the mix without compromising future flexibility.
Sens Spotlight #128 - Are The Ottawa Senators Closer Than People Think?
Q: Is McTavish a realistic target and what would a trade for him mean for the Senators?
McTavish represents a high-upside move; acquiring him would signal a bold shift toward aggressive upgrading of the top six, though it would require careful consideration of fit and cost.
