Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

From Sim Racing to Real Race Commentator: Joe Peak's Journey
Q: How did your opportunity to get into real life commentary come about?
It started when DJ Clark emailed Joe during COVID to get into commentary; Joe emphasizes that background doesn't matter as much as willingness to learn, and his early work with GSRC and SRO built a network that enabled real-world calls later.
From Sim Racing to Real Race Commentator: Joe Peak's Journey
Q: And what was the first series that you called in real life?
Joe explains that the first real-world call came through SRO, with a one-off race at Road America. It led to more opportunities and a steady progression through Porsche Sprint Challenge North America and other series as relationships grew, especially after DJ Clark helped open the door.
From Sim Racing to Real-Life Commentary: Paul Walsh's Journey
Q: What advice would you give to someone wanting to start commenting on sim races?
Start by volunteering, don't fear making mistakes, and learn to roll with them. Build confidence gradually, focus on telling a story about what's happening on screen, and balance enthusiasm with clear, concise narration. Don't over-rely on notes—find a middle ground that keeps you informed without cluttering your broadcast.
From Sim Racing to Real-Life Commentary: Paul Walsh's Journey
Q: How did you first get into commentary and what sparked the transition from sim racing to real-life broadcasting?
I started by trying to improve a friend's broadcast during a casual session, then volunteered with various sim racing communities. The breakthrough came when Next Gen Racing connected me to opportunities with GT3 championships on ACC and later iRacing, which led to paid gigs and then real-life circuit commentary with clubs like MGOC and BARC.
Inside Motorsport Broadcasting with DJ Clark
Q: What would your advice be for anyone that wants to get into real-life motorsport commentary?
Treat every local track or club opportunity as a stepping stone, use sim broadcasting to build a reel, network relentlessly, and most importantly, stay down-to-earth and professional; be the kind of person others want to work with.
