#161: Operation Ironwoman with Emily Bond - from leg surgery to tackling every UK Ironman race in one season
Q: How did your early life and injury shape your approach to this challenge?
A decade-long journey from a challenging youth to a successful return after chronic exertional compartment syndrome surgery in 2018 taught her to value the process, manage recoveries, and view setbacks as learning opportunities rather than failures.
#161: Operation Ironwoman with Emily Bond - from leg surgery to tackling every UK Ironman race in one season
Q: What was the most daunting aspect of undertaking this schedule, and how are you preparing for it?
Breathing and managing fear are the biggest challenges, especially on hilly courses like Leeds and Wales; preparation centers on pacing, rhythm, and adapting plans as needed, with a focus on gradual build and flexible planning to accommodate recovery between events.
#161: Operation Ironwoman with Emily Bond - from leg surgery to tackling every UK Ironman race in one season
Q: What exactly is the challenge you're taking on this summer, and how did it come about?
The plan is to race every UK Ironman event between June and September, starting with halves and progressing to full Ironmans, after a spontaneous idea sparked at Weymouth and a coach's encouragement to formalize it; the motivation grew from a desire to test endurance, learn, and prove what's possible.
