  • Getting way too political

You guys have done a great job, but lately you’ve gotten away to political. I just listened to an episode that instead of being about the river was about politics. I think I’ll be taking a break from a while till you get away from the politics

  • Great podcast — and not just for river folk!

I will struggle to write this review and not be over the top effusive in my praise for this podcast. This is the best researched, written, and produced podcast about rivers……period. Sam Carter, the host, is a delight to listen to and his background in local NPR shines through. Sam is a great interviewer and gets people talking at a depth you might not expect. Imagine Terry Gross in a splash jacket.

Sam wonderfully avoids the “two chuckleheads talking” model all too common in small, topic specif... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Colorado River Basin Snowpack & River Flow 2026
Q: How does ENSO influence winter and spring outcomes in the Colorado Basin?
ENSO signals tend to have a stronger impact on the southern portion of the basin, with El Niño often correlating with wetter winters there, while the upper Colorado Basin shows a weaker or more variable signal, making forecasts for that area less ENSO-dependent.
Colorado River Basin Snowpack & River Flow 2026
Q: How are new data sources like aerial snow surveys and LIDAR affecting forecast accuracy?
Aerial snow surveys and LIDAR-based snow depth measurements provide more timely and higher-resolution data, enabling calibration of models and bias corrections, though reliability varies by dataset and ongoing evaluation is needed to determine when to trust each source.
Colorado River Basin Snowpack & River Flow 2026
Q: What were the key winter conditions that shaped the current year's runoff outlook?
The winter started very wet in October but rapidly turned extremely dry and very warm across much of Utah and Colorado, with a March heat wave accelerating snowmelt and leading to record-low snowpack by April, setting up a challenging forecast for spring runoff.
Columbia Basin Snowpack & River Flow 2026
Q: What has happened since, and are we seeing a pattern or just a one-off year?
Since March, precipitation has not fully recovered snowpack; drought conditions grew, basins face lower April-September volumes, and there is concern among scientists about an emerging pattern of warmer winters and reduced snowpack in many years.
Columbia Basin Snowpack & River Flow 2026
Q: What happened in March, the heat dome event, and how did it affect snowpack and runoff?
The March heat dome caused rapid snowmelt and above-average temperatures across the West, with northern areas faring better in snowpack while southern regions experienced rapid melt and significant runoff, leading to earlier peak flows.
