  • Music Lover’s Paradise

Paul, I never would have found this podcast if you weren’t on “Fly On the Wall.” So glad I heard you mention it because this podcast is a music lover’s paradise. Just listened to your interview with Peter Guralnick, and have only read his excellent “Finding Robert Johnson.” Now I have much more to read! Your interview style is so casual and informative. Keep up the great work. Oh, and I also plan to add your John Candy bio book to my list of Christmas purchases - for myself and a few friends.

This is consistently a great podcast with amazing interviews with superstars and (equally interesting) lesser known artists.

  • Great podcast for keeping up with what's happening in music, not just bands and musicians, but also famous music fans. Nicely paced with usually more than one guest per episode.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Los Lobos' Steve Berlin on a long lost recording from Top Jimmy & The Rhythm Pigs
Q: What were the main challenges in completing Pigus Drunkus Maximus and getting it released?
The main challenges included finding master tapes, which were missing for a long time, and the need to master from a cassette and vinyl copy; there was also a dispute over credit with Raymond Zarek, which Berlin resisted to preserve the producer's rightful role, and finally securing a label to release the record after decades of dormancy.
Los Lobos' Steve Berlin on a long lost recording from Top Jimmy & The Rhythm Pigs
Q: How did you come to work on this record by Top Jimmy & The Rhythm Pigs?
Berlin explains his early entry into the LA scene, meeting people in the punk/R&B circle, then being asked to produce the Top Jimmy project after he had already built a reputation with other bands; he emphasizes the organic, live-recording approach and the lack of a formal label at first, which led to the eventual remaster and release.
Jay Buchanan
Q: Why did you choose to cover Dance Me To The End Of Love and how did you approach it?
He chose the Cohen song for its romantic lyrics and adapted the arrangement to infuse revelry, making it a celebratory track rather than a purely morose one, influenced by the broader mood of the album and artists like Van Morrison.
Jay Buchanan
Q: What was the first record you bought that shaped your musical identity?
The first record was Sting's Dream of the Blue Turtles, which hooked him on the Police-era sound and broader experimentation that followed in his musical journey.
Jay Buchanan
Q: What was the first song you remember writing in the bunker?
The first song was Weapons of Beauty, which served as a sort of letter of intent to the self and became the opening piece that set the emotional course for the record.
