The Reading Instruction Show is a podcast about reading instruction (and other things) with a little bit of attitude. There is plenty here to inform and entertain all. And, by the way, I'm not trying to sell any books. I don't have any curriculum or programs to market. I don't accept speaking fees. And, I don't ever want to be a consultant.

In a recent show, I referred to Emily Hanford as the Alexa App of reading instruction. This was a metaphor, a common literary device in which one makes a comparison without using the words ‘like’ or ‘as’. It creates an image. When we say America is a... more
If somebody makes the claim that research says something, one has an obligation to have read a research article at least once in their life. And if somebody says, “Show me the research,” that person should know what research is and how to read and in... more
Legitimate professional development for teachers is necessary. I used the term ‘legitimate’ to exclude programs and services that are profit-based. These are usually little more than infomercials disguised as professional development. Here, there is ... more
Toadys sometimes call themselves “consultants”. They promote methods and say things that just happen to coincide with the products and services being sold by Big Publishing. Quite a coincidence, yes? Right and wrong are not determined based on what’s... more

This man knows what he’s talking about. He clearly understands literacy research and is magnifying the many, many issues that reading researchers have with SOR mania. The zealots will look foolish when this is all over, and Dr. Johnson will be standing tall on the mountains of evidence we have.
We’ll all look back on this time as a dark time in literacy education. Schools have thrown out perfectly good materials based on faulty interpretations of the science, mostly spurred by a poorly researc... more
I started listening to this podcast after I listened to “Sold a Story”. I wanted to learn more about literacy education from a different perspective. This podcast has actually solidified my support for the Science of Reading (SoR) as the presenter does little more than repeatedly call SoR supporters clowns and say to listen to experts. He constantly says that non-SoR approaches are supported by research, but never cites those studies.
This is an entertaining podcast to listen to, but adds litt... more
Just another biased man who will say or defend anything to sell his curriculum and books. His audience is ignorant people because they don’t know any better.
It is important that we read peer reviewed journals, listen to experts, and take advice from people actually in the field of education. Thank you for talking about literacy in a way that makes sense for all readers. It is infuriating that so many people are spreading misinformation about what is really going on in our schools. This podcast might not be as flashy or dramatic as Hanford’s but it actually uses data, proven facts and the podcaster is a professional in the field of education.
I listen to one episode of this podcast looking at the reading wars. It quickly became obvious that this guy is a standard prog. he describes anyone who criticises Ken Goodman as a “flapping penguin”, something he will no doubt claim was just a joke, but which rather undermines his message of being someone with serious credibility.
He spent a large portion of the podcast attacking Emily Hanford, for reasons, entirely unrelated to the story. He claims, for example that she is a journalist, and t... more
