  • Entertaining but I also learned a lot

I really liked the tax episode - didn’t think it would be possible to make that entertaining but it’s a great listen, and unlike other podcasts on policy it has a lot on solutions and fixes rather than just focusing on what’s not working. Recommended.

How Andy Burnham can build a sovereign digital state, with Mallory Durran | Episode 3: Andy Burnham's first 100 days
Q: What would you do if you were in Andy Burnham's shoes on day one?
Establish a nationwide, standards-based framework for procurement and data models, appoint senior technical people, and commit to cross-sector governance to prevent vendor lock-in and accelerate implementation.
How Andy Burnham can close Britain’s tax gap, with Dan Neidle | Episode 1: Andy Burnham's first 100 days
Q: Is a revenue-neutral reform plausible and desirable in the first 100 days?
Yes, if the reforms are structured to be revenue-neutral or lead to a modest tax cut, it can change public perception of tax policy and provide credibility; real opportunities exist in CGT adjustments and closing gaps through targeted simplifications.
How Andy Burnham can close Britain’s tax gap, with Dan Neidle | Episode 1: Andy Burnham's first 100 days
Q: How should the government think about reforming property-related taxes like stamp duty and business rates?
Consider replacing them with a land value tax or a more proportionate property tax to reduce distortions, while acknowledging transitional challenges and political feasibility; the idea is to avoid penalizing development and instead tax the value of land more progressively.
How Andy Burnham can close Britain’s tax gap, with Dan Neidle | Episode 1: Andy Burnham's first 100 days
Q: What should be the core principle that guides tax reform in the near term?
Stability and certainty must be the core principle, so businesses can plan for the long term and policy changes are predictable rather than abrupt or ad hoc.
How Andy Burnham can take back control from big tech, with Baroness Beeban Kidron OBE
Q: What should Andy Burnham do in the first 100 days regarding technology policy?
Make a bold commitment to protecting copyright for creators, place child protection and healthy digital development at the center of policy, and launch a public conversation about AI in Britain to determine what kind of economy and jobs we want to keep, supported by a sovereign data and infrastructure framework.
