  • Accessible, even for the wrong kind of nerd?

I’m currently pursuing my masters in environmental toxicology, and even though this show is focused on medical toxicology, it has a large amount of overlap with my niche in the field. Although there are a few things I will occasionally have to write down to review later (oh no, learning something new!), I take great joy in listening to this podcast. It’s always interesting, and Ryan and his team do a fantastic production job, making the hour or so fly by. I usually consider myself too unfocused ... more

  • Binge Worthy!

I only recently discovered this podcast and I have been binging all of the old episodes! This show is engaging, hilarious, and brimming with knowledge. This is a great podcast to explore a lot of the high risk, low frequency emergencies that healthcare workers may encounter throughout their career. Keep up the good work Ryan and Toxo!

  • A new binge worthy pod

I needed an escape from … the news. Anyway, this is that escape for me. As a layperson it is technical but I really like hearing about experts in their field, working to make the world better - in this case by studying the effects of sometimes heinous substances on the human body.

Escape for a bit and learn some really cool stuff too.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

If I had a Nickel (Mystery Case) & Toxicologist vs The internet (#13) with Dr. Damilola Idowu-Ellsworth
Q: Why do I get muscle spasms in my hands after taking a lot of Lyrica?
Lyrica and similar drugs can disrupt the inhibitory and excitatory balance in motor control circuits, potentially leading to muscle spasms or myoclonus, especially when combined with other medications like baclofen.
If I had a Nickel (Mystery Case) & Toxicologist vs The internet (#13) with Dr. Damilola Idowu-Ellsworth
Q: What are the potential implications of GLP-1 medications on the release of toxins stored in adipose tissue?
There may be implications for chronic THC users, as rapid weight loss from GLP-1 medications could mobilize THC stored in fat, potentially leading to elevated serum levels. This could complicate drug test interpretations and bring legal concerns.
Toxicologist vs The internet (#12) with Dr. Joe Kennedy MD
Q: Is there any scenario in which Tromethamine or Tham would be preferred in a toxicologic syndrome?
Tham is necessary if a patient has a very high CO2 level and you are about to intubate them; it can buffer the acidosis without increasing CO2.
Toxicologist vs The internet (#12) with Dr. Joe Kennedy MD
Q: If a patient has normal kidney function, should dialysis even be done for ingestion?
Intermittent hemodialysis is vastly faster than the kidneys can eliminate certain drugs, and for some drugs, the risk of poison overdose warrants it, even with normal kidney function.
MURDER for Lunch: Toxicologist vs The internet (#11) with Dr. Amy Zosel MD
Q: What OTC drugs can you get high off and how specifically for each one?
Dextromethorphan and diphenhydramine are commonly abused OTC drugs that can lead to severe health effects, including death.
