The Peacemaker podcast explores a harrowing suicide cluster that unfolded in a rural college town. Hosted by BEN WESTHOFF and RYAN KRULL, this series is set at Truman State University, sometimes called the Harvard of the Midwest, where a few years back a string of suicides at the Alpha Kappa Lambda house shook the community to its core. I haven’t listened to a true crime podcast in quite some time. I am so glad I learned about this one. If you’re into true crime and want something different, strongly recommend. Already binged the few episodes that are out. Definitely reminds me of Serial bc it’s not clear how much or not the person at the center of this story is guilty. Lots to think about, when it comes to ethics, and people who have grandiose perceptions of thief ability to connect/support others. Narrator reminds me of Mike ... more
While the hosts voice does take some getting used to, the story itself is interesting enough to keep me engaged.
This literally doesn’t provide any insight beyond what’s on a previous New York Times article.
My sister went to this college and I have family from around that area. You narrate this like you are so shocked small, rural towns exist. It come off very elitist. Not everyone around that area would have 2nd amendment American flags. Would a lot, sure, but not everyone. You literally came to a small rural town in Missouri and speak like you are so shocked somewhere like this exist. Never thought I would defend Kirksville and the surrounding area but dang, you could have left your personal dist... more
This is a very interesting story and a lot of the episodes so far are fine, but at times, especially on the fourth episode, the tone is really off for a story about suicide (jokey, sarcastic, “looking cool” at the bar). I don’t think it’s being intentionally tone-deaf, but it is. Also not sure if the phrasing being used is the preferred language when discussing suicide .
