  • Bridging the gap of academics and pastoring

Perhaps I like it since they feel like they’re speaking directly to me. I have an MDiv degree but feel like I have so much to learn before moving into full-time ministry. The Center for Pastor Theologians (CPT) exists to equip pastors to be theologians for today’s complex world. If nothing else, this has helped me grow in humility and in recognition of how many books I still wish to read!

  • So disappointed

I so wanted to listen, but then heard it start with the bravado for Dan and the comment on celebrity pastors. That was an immediate turn off. That’s one of the many problems of American evangelism today..the desire to be a celebrity! So sad they’d go there

  • Excellent Podcast

CPT content has been vital in my sense of calling and vocation, and I don’t know of any other organization speaking about the ecclesial theologian enterprise as clearly, compellingly, and consistently as the CPT. I couldn’t recommend the podcast more.

  • Thanks

Thank you for helping me sort through the internal struggle; I have had growing in my spirit over the last decade. In attempts to talk with others or find a church where I believed I was on the same page. I’m still bewildered, but feel reinsured that I’m not alone.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

BONUS | Kyle Fever on Books and Preaching
Q: Kyle, why don't you walk us through, what are some resources that have been helpful for you that you would recommend to listeners?
Kyle highlights Bonhoeffer's Life Together and James KA. Smith's On the Road with St. Augustine as foundational for understanding community, formation, and the pastoral calling, then adds Rich Mullins' music as a shaping influence on spirituality and preaching.
Becoming a Pastor Theologian | Kyle Fever
Q: What influenced your decision to pursue Loyola over more evangelical PhD programs?
Kyle valued warmth, collegiality, and mentorship in a setting that allowed honest wrestling with scripture without being forced into a doctrinal box, which he found at Loyola compared to other evangelical programs.
Becoming a Pastor Theologian | Kyle Fever
Q: When did you start feeling called to pastoral ministry, given your academic interests?
The sense of calling emerged slowly; after finishing his doctorate and exploring teaching, Kyle felt pulled toward pastoral work as life circumstances and family needs suggested a more grounded, relational form of ministry rather than purely academic paths.
BONUS | Joey Sherrard on Books and Preaching
Q: So talk to us a bit about maybe a couple of the themes.
The four books in Teaching Christianity center on interpreting Scripture, with the first and fourth books offering especially helpful themes: the hermeneutical end of pastoral work and the idea that preaching should aim to teach, delight, and persuade. This approach balances understanding with beauty and practical application in ministry.
Jonathan Griffiths | Gathered for Good
Q: Why pursue a PhD, and how has it influenced your ministry in Ottawa?
He explains that the PhD was chosen to deepen biblical understanding and teaching, enabling him to mentor others and lead at a seminary level while serving as a pastor. He stresses formation over credentials and highlights how academic work reshapes ministry practice.
