  • The Presidents, in context

I just finished catching up on the back catalog of The Past, The Promise, The Presidency, and I look forward to many future seasons. I found the show through Lindsay Chervinsky’s conversation about Washington’s executive privilege on This Day in Esoteric Political History.

I am a fan of the “bring in the experts to monologue” format, though it’s uncommon in podcasts. Letting the guests speak at length feels more like a short university lecture from a great professor—something I never had in th... more

  • Amazing

This is an brilliant podcast it is hosted by scholars and historians who explore the twin issues race relations and the U.S Presidents. It shows how presidents beginning with Lincoln and concluding with Trump dealt with race and how the issue of race impacted the institution of the presidency. The hosts are engaging and really made me think about things using the latest historiography and research.

The Life and Death of Ryan White: A Conversation with Dr. Paul Renfro
Q: What does the HIV and AIDS policy look like now?
It's a bit of a mess right now, with funding being inconsistent and significant gaps in healthcare access for individuals with HIV.
The Life and Death of Ryan White: A Conversation with Dr. Paul Renfro
Q: How do you think the public stigma and the pace or direction of federal policy responses might have developed differently if it wasn't for Ryan White?
Without Ryan White's widely perceived innocence, it's unclear how stigma and federal responses would have evolved, as activists had a love-hate relationship with his portrayal while realizing his name was necessary for legislation.
The Life and Death of Ryan White: A Conversation with Dr. Paul Renfro
Q: What led you to frame this book, not necessarily as a biography of Ryan White, but as a broader examination of how race and racialized ideas of innocence shape public response to the HIV and AIDS epidemic?
In a sense, it is a biography, but it's what I would call a cultural biography, focusing on how the politics of innocence shapes American history and public responses to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
Prioritizing Faith: A Conversation with Dr. Ashlyn Hand
Q: Why did religious freedom resurface as a significant aspect of U.S. foreign policy?
It was a combination of the end of the Cold War, the rise of the international human rights movement, and advocacy from domestic organizations, especially evangelical groups that drew attention to global religious suffering.
Prioritizing Faith: A Conversation with Dr. Ashlyn Hand
Q: If the Cold War hadn't occurred, do you think that religious freedom would still have been considered a central part of U.S. human rights and foreign policy?
It's difficult to say, but the Cold War surfaced religious freedom issues, helping to publicize religious dissidents which paved the way for more focus on international religious freedom post-Cold War.
