  • Over 4 Years Still Love It!

This is one of my favorite podcasts and I've been listening to it every morning for over 4 years. Say there are many amazing traits to the show, but above all, it’s amazing because of its brevity, positivity, and political neutrality (which is very hard to find in the news)

  • Informative, but America Centric

As far as I’m aware, this podcast is unique in its category. Unfortunately, despite probably having a global audience, it tends toward North American centrism, in both the news and advertisements they select. In particular, it isn’t always clear whether an advertiser only serves North American customers, and news items that have no relevance to a global audience are usually presented as if everyone in the audience lives in the US. It’s otherwise a good podcast.

  • AI Sub?

Wow. Today’s listening to today’s episode was brutal. I do not ever want AI reading the news to me. Erica’s broadcast is typically upbeat and personable. If this continues, I’ll find a new new source.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Special Edition: Rethinking Traditional Classroom Rules & Rewards
Q: How can parents advocate for better practices when they can't change the school?
Parents should learn the research, engage with the principal and school board, and advocate for meeting psychological needs at home and at school, emphasizing language to describe dysregulation and the request for breaks.
Special Edition: Rethinking Traditional Classroom Rules & Rewards
Q: What are some concrete tools or activities you recommend instead of traditional rewards?
Use movement, doodling, fidgets, and developmentally appropriate play; replace “if-then” rewards with “when” and “then” celebrations; and ensure all students are included in positive, shared celebrations to avoid singling out individuals.
Special Edition: Rethinking Traditional Classroom Rules & Rewards
Q: How should teachers handle transitions and arousal at the start of the school year?
Transitions are stressful for developing brains; using rhythmic activities to gradually taper energy and using physical or sensory strategies helps lower arousal so students can shift into learning mode.
Special Edition: Rethinking Traditional Classroom Rules & Rewards
Q: Can you summarize your core philosophy for meeting kids' needs in the classroom?
The core idea is that there are basic psychological needs—autonomy, belonging, and competency—plus safety and comfort, which must be met for kids to function well. When these needs are consistently addressed, the nervous system feels safe and learning can happen more effectively.
Special Edition: Are We Losing Shared Culture?
Q: What are the downsides of a highly personalized media landscape?
The guest notes a loss of common experiences and shared cultural references, with viewers often living in parallel media ecosystems that limit cross-audience awareness and understanding.
