  • One of my new favorite podcasts!!!

Having been in the formative years of the internet, through the development of Motion Picture VFX & immersive technologies, I can honestly say this was the first time in a long time I’ve listened to a podcast that had as valuable world perspective insights on this new era as it was fun to listen to. I was introduced to this podcast from Alvin Wang Graylin’s interview (a must listen to) and will most definitely be working my way through all the epsidodes!! Highly Recommended!!

Baiguan’s Robert Wu on Real Estate, Robotaxis, and What's Actually Driving the Economy in 2026
Q: Can you tell us about Baiguan, what it is, who you're writing for, and what led you to start covering the Chinese economy?
Baiguan is a data and research service providing investment managers and corporates with China-focused insights. The firm started in response to widespread misunderstanding about China during a difficult period, aiming to translate data into clear, investable narratives for global players.
Jacob Cooke on Alibaba's AI Bet, AI in China, China E-Commerce Data, and the Canada-China Reset
Q: Can you summarize the key takeaways from WPIC's China e-commerce data report?
Chinese consumers are spending smarter and upgrading their product quality expectations, with Douyin gaining ground on traditional platforms like Tmall across multiple categories. Growth is strongest in items like fashion, outdoor and pet products, and nutraceuticals, driven by a preference for high-quality brands and educational, live-stream content that builds trust.
Jacob Cooke on Alibaba's AI Bet, AI in China, China E-Commerce Data, and the Canada-China Reset
Q: What makes Token Hub and the Wukong platform significant for AI monetization in China?
Token Hub introduces a token-based monetization approach that allows more flexible pricing and access to AI tools, reducing reliance on fixed subscriptions and enabling a broader set of enterprise users. Wukong complements this with easy integration and broad deployment potential, including connections to popular collaboration tools like WeChat, Teams, and Slack, which could accelerate enterprise AI adoption in China.
Jacob Cooke on Alibaba's AI Bet, AI in China, China E-Commerce Data, and the Canada-China Reset
Q: Let's start with Alibaba earnings and the AI angle—why are you encouraged despite weak net income?
Revenue showed resilience with for‑like growth, a strategic focus on AI and data centers, and AI product segments delivering strong growth. Token Hub and Wukong could unlock new monetization and lower costs, potentially benefiting the broader ecosystem and giving Alibaba a more open, token-based model for enterprise use.
Mark Carney’s Beijing Visit and What It Means for Canadian Business in China
Q: Are Canadian brands benefiting from the U.S.-China tensions?
The guest argues that while it's not about benefiting from tariffs, Canada could be pushed to look globally, which may ultimately be positive for brands long‑term; some Canadian brands already strong in China may not rely on Carney for continued success.
