  • Informative for anyone in the field

I like this podcast, I am currently in the field and although most of the topics discussed are not new to me, it’s a great resource for people new to the field or want to learn / understand more about neurosurgery and IONM.

Audio quality can be improved hard to hear sometimes in my car without turning the volume up quite high.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

SpineLine - Preoperative and Preprocedural Risk Assessment and Mitigation Strategies
Q: How did you decide on the scope of the risk factors to include?
We started with the AAOS preoperative toolkit and expanded as a committee, ultimately focusing on preoperative and perioperative factors, while recognizing there are additional elements like sleep apnea and social determinants that we may tackle later.
What We Thought We Knew About Treating Cervical Radiculopathy
Q: What is your approach when a patient is considering surgery after a consult—does meeting with a surgeon create an obligation to operate?
No obligation exists; the goal is to ensure the patient understands all options, and if they choose not to proceed with surgery, the clinician continues to support them with the best non-surgical care.
What We Thought We Knew About Treating Cervical Radiculopathy
Q: What signals in the history and exam push you toward surgery versus continuing with conservative care or referrals to other specialists?
Progression of symptoms, especially neurological changes or weakness that aligns with imaging findings, and a careful assessment of whether non-surgical treatments are likely to help in the near term.
What We Thought We Knew About Treating Cervical Radiculopathy
Q: Dr. Placide, can you speak a little about the importance and history of the history and physical exam and how technology has informed it over the years?
The history and physical exam remain foundational; they help distinguish spine issues from masqueraders and guide the next steps, with imaging playing a supportive rather than sole role.
Benefits of Robotics in Spine Surgery
Q: Can you share cases where robotics made a big difference in achieving a good result?
In both MIS procedures and complex deformity cases, robotics enables smaller incisions and precise screw placement, allows simultaneous multi-team collaboration, reduces exposure to radiation during revisions, and facilitates navigating limited spaces around prior hardware.
