  • Thoughtful, curious and fascinating interviews

This is one of my favorites not because I’m totally into mycology—though I do find the subject fascinating—but because of how thoughtfully the interviews are done, and what amazing guests come on the show. The curiosity and humbleness of this podcast is just wonderful and I always feel uplifted and educated after each episode. Can’t recommend it highly enough. Keep up the great work!

  • Platformed someone who spreads eco-fascist propaganda

it’s possible that this podcast just doesn’t vet their guests but it’s also possible they platformed Olga from smugtown mushrooms specifically because she’s spread eco-fascist propaganda on social media, particularly Michael Moore’s planet of the humans documentary which talks about human overpopulation being the major concern for climate change and also has links to anti-semitic conspiracy theories. In my community she has a reputation that leads people to avoid working with her but she’s treate... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep. 199: Natural Navigator - How to Read Trees, Water and Sky Footprints (feat. Tristan Gooley)
Q: What role does storytelling and historical sources play in natural navigation?
He describes three sources—work of others (academic papers, explorations), personal observations, and conversations with people from different cultures—which together create a triangle that fuels learning and expands the range of clues one can use.
Ep. 199: Natural Navigator - How to Read Trees, Water and Sky Footprints (feat. Tristan Gooley)
Q: What are the core building blocks of reading nature, and how do they translate into mapmaking?
Gooley explains that clues come from trees, leaves, clouds, water, wind, and animal behavior; by observing patterns and relationships, one can create a mental map where each element acts as a signpost that points to location, weather, and resources.
Ep. 199: Natural Navigator - How to Read Trees, Water and Sky Footprints (feat. Tristan Gooley)
Q: How did Tristan first start on the path of natural navigation?

Ep. 198: Red House Architecture – Pioneering Mycelium Materials in Namibia, Cleveland & Outer Space (feat. Christopher Maurer)
Q: How did you navigate regulatory challenges when making materials out of fungi?
We demonstrated our materials by building structures and getting them certified rather than trying to introduce them into the market directly, which helps bypass some challenges.
Ep. 198: Red House Architecture – Pioneering Mycelium Materials in Namibia, Cleveland & Outer Space (feat. Christopher Maurer)
Q: What was that process of discovery like in finding the right mycelial strains to work with?
In Namibia, we prioritized food production and chose gourmet oyster mushrooms due to their market demand. They also began exploring various species based on properties they offered.
