Back in 2015, a girl named Joy Morgan started watching strange videos on YouTube. Videos of men with loud voices, draped in purple and gold robes, reciting fiery scripture from the Bible.
At first, she was simply curious. She was a teenager after all. But soon she started to believe what they were saying. The way they preached spoke to her. At school, she told a classmate he wouldn’t be going to h... more

This podcast lacked an identity- not sure what the podcaster wanted this to be? As others mentioned— was this about a victim and closure or about exposing a potentially dangerous group that verges on a cult? Either one didn’t land. You find yourself saying, pick a lane, or merge into one story. Neither happened. Also, the podcaster references themselves as a journalist, this a journalistic piece, and journalistic integrity—yet provided misinformation (evening managing to work in false narratives... more
I am so disappointed in this podcast. They lean heavy on the lack of interest from the media in regard to Black murder victims. They then proceed to tell us NOTHING about Joy except she was a member of IUIC and she was murdered. THAT’S IT. Everything else is a surface level narration on why IUIC is bad. I had to google when she died, how she died, the criminal investigation, trial, verdict, EVERYTHING!! It’s devastating to see how little a black reporter cared about a black murder victim
Interesting podcast and good to hear stories of people of colour. Gal Dem is missed!
This was predominately about the IUIC, and that was interesting. However, the podcast struggled to find a cohesive narrative by trying to be both about the church and Joy. It left it not being an in-depth look at either. Also, the City of Hope episode could have been five minutes long.

It’s a great mix of investigation into a high control group, true crime, modern misogyny and advocacy for the under reporting of missing bipoc women and children. The presenters have great insight and have obviously worked really hard to present their material ethically. Joy comes across as a relatable, smart, caring young woman who’s loss was felt intensely by her community. This serves as a warning against these kind of groups and how they prey on... more
