Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Question Time with Gary Jubelin
Q: What has been the most surprising development in recent interviews or information received about the case?
New testimonies from people connected overseas, plus contemplations about the Japan route and the possible, though unconfirmed, links to specific individuals, have reignited questions that investigators could reassess with fresh context.
Dr Sarah Wayland - Voices for the Missing
Q: Why is the concept of ambiguous loss central to your work and the toolkit you've built?
Ambiguous loss captures the lived reality of families who remain in limbo—physically present, but not knowing the fate of their loved one—and it shapes how we teach, counsel, and communicate to balance hope with the need for truth and care.
Dr Sarah Wayland - Voices for the Missing
Q: What have you learned about media's role in missing persons that could inform safer reporting guidelines?
People believe media helps locate people, but the data on outcomes is limited; focus groups with families, police, and media professionals highlighted the need for guidelines that prevent re-traumatization and ensure responsible framing of stories.
Dr Sarah Wayland - Voices for the Missing
Q: What motivated your shift from frontline practice to academic research and resource creation for families of missing people?
I wanted to ensure that what happens at the coalface—how families experience distress, what helps them cope, and how media and police interact with them—was captured, analyzed, and turned into practical guidance for counsellors, police, and media professionals.
Aaron Matters.... Missing 2,093 days
Q: What has your experience been with speaking with the media?
The family's media experiences have been mixed: some were highly controlled and procedural, while other efforts by independent podcasters and advocates have helped to humanize Aaron's story and give us renewed motivation to pursue information.
