Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#63: Symbols, Psychosis, and Common Ground: A Lacan-Jung Dialogue with Stijn Vanheule
Q: What is the role of language in shaping the subject, especially in neurosis vs. psychosis?
Neurosis involves conflict within existing discourses, while psychosis occurs when events cannot be framed by those discourses, leading to a breakdown and emergence of unnameable elements that resist conventional meaning.
#63: Symbols, Psychosis, and Common Ground: A Lacan-Jung Dialogue with Stijn Vanheule
Q: How would you describe the three registers and their practical implications for understanding psychosis?
The imaginary handles image creation and self-representation, the symbolic provides structure via language and rules, and the real is the domain where drives push beyond symbolic meaning; psychosis arises when the real disrupts or overwhelms the symbolic and imaginary, forcing a new way of relating to reality.
#63: Symbols, Psychosis, and Common Ground: A Lacan-Jung Dialogue with Stijn Vanheule
Q: Could you maybe comment on that to kick us off?
The idea is that Lacan saw a dichotomy between stupidity and madness as two possible human responses to not knowing; stupidity involves sticking to conventional answers, while madness reflects the groundlessness of existence, which, though painful, can reveal a deeper truth about our condition.
