Far too many ads, huge doses of TDS and Richard Arnold is the most left leaning commentator I’ve ever heard.

  • The whistle has to go.

I wear a headset to listen to this show. Everytime you do mark the week. You blow a stupid whistle and it’s too loud. Either ditch it or turn the stupid whistle noise down.

Even for someone like me who would have voted National, Mike’s bias is so much that I find the show embarrassing. The last straw for me is hearing him talk to his Australian correspondent Steve Price highly opinionated charlatan known here in Australia for his superficial understanding of the world.Fortunately, the time for broadcasters like Mike is near its end.

I can’t get ZB here in Whangarei, new cars(at least mine) do not have AM so the only access is the podcast. Now if they can just separate the snippets from the full show, life would be perfect.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Tony Alexander: Independent Property Commentator on the impact of wholesale borrowing for banks increasing on mortgage rates
Q: How much competition is there at the moment within the banks, regarding market share and lending policies?
Tony explains banks are somewhat confused due to shifting investor demand and asymmetric lending focus, with competition still relatively strong among banks despite weaker retail dwelling sales.
Tony Alexander: Independent Property Commentator on the impact of wholesale borrowing for banks increasing on mortgage rates
Q: How much of this is really just the unknown?
Tony notes that there is an element of unknown, but he emphasizes domestic recovery, inflation pressures, and the risk that policy will stay tighter longer as key drivers, with uncertainty mostly around how external factors feed through.
John Battersby: Massey University Centre for Defence and Security Studies Senior Fellow on the Government considering purchasing one-way strike drones
Q: Is it just me? I don't think of our Defence Force as like a strike force type operation, or am I being unfair?
The guest explains that NZ does have military capabilities for defence, argues a strike capability could be appropriate given changing technology and cost considerations, and emphasizes the need for a broader drone strategy rather than a single-use approach.
Clive Elliott KC: Intellectual Property Lawyer on the New Zealand designers who are being copied by fast fashion giants like Shein and AliExpress
Q: Is it worth it to pursue action or is the cost of litigation too high?
Clive suggests a practical path where industry groups coordinate takedowns and maintain design records, rather than pursuing individual lawsuits, to create a faster, collective pressure on offending platforms like AliExpress.
Full Show Podcast: 22 July 2026
Q: Why was Golden Bay Cement not carved out of the ETS in the deal?
The guest explains that carving out one firm could undermine the ETS as a whole and create a taxpayer burden, so the government chose a targeted commercial agreement to protect national cement supply without destabilizing the emissions trading framework.
