  • My favourite sailing podcast

When I started listening to The Mariner, it quickly became my favourite sailing podcast. I simply enjoy listening to CSM chatting about the tricks of his trade and telling stories of the great oceans. Professional sailing has never been so approachable. I am sure that I will find myself in a position some time in the future when I try to solve a problem on board and think of his words. 5 star podcast! Thank you Chris!

  • Must listen!

Thought I’d already found all the sailing podcasts worth listening to, but I was wrong. One episode in and it’s some of the most valuable educational content I’ve come across to date. Thanks!

  • Insightful and passionate

As a new skipper, I appreciate the insightful comments that allow text book knowledge, real world practise, and modern seamanship to coalesce in a reasonable and practical way. As far as I’m concerned the more practical and nitty-gritty the better! Thanks!

  • Robert Redford Movie??

Are you comparing a Hollywood movie to a real life vessel emergency situation? Did I mis hear ? Surely not.. the movie is a drawn out fabrication of poor skills applied to an otherwise pretty quick demise..

  • At sea Its the tangents that you need to watch

#96 | Questions & Tangents 12 | Over-riding Turns, Poor Winch Placememt & Finding Warm Gloves for Sailing
Q: What gloves do we wear when we're on board the boat?
A good option is wearing a two-layer system: a thicker gauntlet for insulation and a thin, dexterous glove underneath for manipulation.
#96 | Questions & Tangents 12 | Over-riding Turns, Poor Winch Placememt & Finding Warm Gloves for Sailing
Q: What could you say about overriding turns?
Overriding turns occur when the line coming into the winch makes its way on top of the wraps that already exist, typically due to too high an entry angle or excessive friction.
#104 | Questions & Tangents | Maybe Don't Buy an Old Race Boat
Q: Is it really okay to buy a race boat?
It depends; there are emotional and practical implications to consider, especially relating to one's current life situation and goals.
#110 | Dogwatch | Autopliots V's Wind Vanes | US West Coast Deliveries | Curved.Traveler Tracks
Q: Why do Maxi Trimaran and other boats have a large half-circle structure at the stern?
Chris explains that these structures provide safety and storage but also enhance sailing performance by enabling better sail adjustments, helping to manage the wind and improve efficiency.
#110 | Dogwatch | Autopliots V's Wind Vanes | US West Coast Deliveries | Curved.Traveler Tracks
Q: Is it possible, theoretically at least, to operate a three-speed winch with three people, two on the coffee grinder and a third person cranking the handle on the top of the winch?
Chris responds that while it might be theoretically possible, it poses significant safety risks due to timing and potential injuries, emphasizing that it is best to use either a coffee grinder winch or a top-loaded winch.
