  • Thanks from another multicraft maker

I especially enjoyed this episode because I’m a weaver, basketmaker, potter & dabbler in woodcarving, blacksmithing & flint knapping. I’m doing all of this in retirement after a career in chemical engineering and teaching. But those careers also reflected a lifelong fascination with how we can make useful things from the stuff around us. Thanks for an interesting episode!

  • Good show needs editing more sharply

Enjoy the show but it could be more sharply edited - sometimes over an hour is just too long. But some great subjects

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Kate Larson, Farm & Fiber Knits
Q: Some people think that the magazine is only for hand spinners or only for small-batch yarns; how do you envision readers working with this, both with the yarns and with the stories?
We aim to be inclusive and welcoming across a spectrum of involvement, from urban knitters to farm yarn enthusiasts, and to show how natural fibers connect everyone, regardless of whether they live on a farm or simply appreciate the craft. The magazine curates a mix of small-batch and larger-scale yarns, linking them to stories and broader fiber culture so readers can enter the field at their own pace.
Coming Soon: The Yarn Barn of Kansas Book Club
Q: How many books did you bring to the booth, and what range do they cover?
Hundreds of books across weaving, knitting, spinning, dying, carding, and related topics, including rare, privately printed titles and reprints from old master weavers.
Heather Torgenrud, Pick-Up Bandweaving
Q: For our listeners who are maybe not familiar with rose path, can you describe a little bit about the weave structure and how it works and how it looks?
Heather explains that rose path on opposites uses a point twill threading with a twill tie-up, two colors, and a diagonal lattice pattern that can be reversible, with texture that varies from quilted-like to smooth depending on the weave and color choices.
Heather Torgenrud, Pick-Up Bandweaving
Q: So do you consider yourself to be a Scandinavian textile artist, or do you consider yourself to be a bandweaver?
Heather describes herself as a handweaver designer with a Scandinavian influence, emphasizing her roots, the Norwegian language, and the Baltic pickup tradition as the lens through which she views her work.
Gudrun Johnston, The Shetland Trader
Q: How do you view the relationship between heritage and innovation in your work?
Heritage traditions are living, not static. I honor classic motifs like Fair Isle and lace while exploring modern constructions, color palettes, and even venturing into garment categories like vests and short-row techniques to keep the craft relevant and wearable today.
