  • Thanks from another multicraft maker

I especially enjoyed this episode because I’m a weaver, basketmaker, potter & dabbler in woodcarving, blacksmithing & flint knapping. I’m doing all of this in retirement after a career in chemical engineering and teaching. But those careers also reflected a lifelong fascination with how we can make useful things from the stuff around us. Thanks for an interesting episode!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Diana Wiley, Handspun Hope
Q: How did you decide to start this in Rwanda?
The founder sought to combine safe housing with meaningful livelihoods. After a trip with World Relief in 2007, she saw how many women needed support and realized fiber could be a viable income source, eventually building a campus with staff, healthcare, and education to sustain women and their families.
Diana Wiley, Handspun Hope
Q: Can you tell me a little bit about the company and your project?
Handspun Hope is a nonprofit in Rwanda that works with at-risk women, providing sustainable employment as well as holistic care like healthcare, education, and counseling. They source and spin fibers from multiple regions, including merino from Rwanda and cotton from Ethiopia, and they create a range of products from yarn to felted sculptures, with a strong emphasis on reinvestment and empowerment.
Reweaving Marguerite Porter Davison’s Handweaver’s Pattern Book
Q: Caroline, could we start with you?
Caroline introduces her family connection to Marguerite Davison, explains the copyright and organizational efforts behind The Big Weave, and outlines the goal of reviving the Handweaver's Pattern Book while honoring Marguerite's voice.
Kate Larson, Farm & Fiber Knits
Q: Some people think that the magazine is only for hand spinners or only for small-batch yarns; how do you envision readers working with this, both with the yarns and with the stories?
We aim to be inclusive and welcoming across a spectrum of involvement, from urban knitters to farm yarn enthusiasts, and to show how natural fibers connect everyone, regardless of whether they live on a farm or simply appreciate the craft. The magazine curates a mix of small-batch and larger-scale yarns, linking them to stories and broader fiber culture so readers can enter the field at their own pace.
Coming Soon: The Yarn Barn of Kansas Book Club
Q: How many books did you bring to the booth, and what range do they cover?
Hundreds of books across weaving, knitting, spinning, dying, carding, and related topics, including rare, privately printed titles and reprints from old master weavers.
