Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Lonely Voice: 'Fun with a Stranger' by Richard Yates
Q: Why did you choose this one from the collection?
They discuss Yates's fascination with teacher stories and the moving target of interpreting Ms. Snell, noting how the eraser gift becomes a powerful symbol of love, loneliness, and the complexity of characters.
The Lonely Voice: 'Fun with a Stranger' by Richard Yates
Q: So what do you think about this story?
The hosts describe it as a classic that feels deceptively simple but reveals depth upon rereading, especially around point of view and the intimate way the narrator follows the children, not the teacher, while still shaping our understanding of loneliness.
The Lonely Voice: 'Nine Months Since Forever' & 'The Giver of Nicknames' by Rémy Ngamije
Q: What drew you to the Giver of Nicknames as a focal point for guilt and accountability in high school life?
The weight of unspoken truths and the moment of confession set against coercive systems creates a powerful tension; I aimed to show how a young person carries both action and the weight of what they didn't do, shaping who they become.
The Lonely Voice: 'Nine Months Since Forever' & 'The Giver of Nicknames' by Rémy Ngamije
Q: Where did the idea for the married-couple dynamic in Nine Months Since Forever come from, and how did you design Cicero's relationship with his friends?
It grew out of seeing how marriage changes social dynamics and the way friends interact with each other once a new center of gravity enters the scene; I wanted to explore loyalty, change, and the discomfort of letting go, while still honoring the strength of the bond.
