  • Would give 6 stars!

I’m not a big listener of podcasts, but the Laundry gets me excited every week for a new release! As someone who works in the field of financial crime, I used to find most podcasts on related topics to be too dry, too specific and not engaging. Discovering The Laundry has made me engaged on a whole other level!

E163: Is the 2026 World Cup the financial crime event of the year?
Q: Is the global financial system genuinely ready for the 2026 World Cup?
Absolutely not, regulators and banks face a significant challenge from multiple fronts including human trafficking, sanctions risk, and the sheer volume of cross-border payments during the event.
E163: Is the 2026 World Cup the financial crime event of the year?
Q: Is the Corruption Perception Index useful for actual compliance work?
Yes, all data is useful as long as it's applied correctly, and the index should be integrated with other signals and operational tools to inform risk-based decisions.
E163: Is the 2026 World Cup the financial crime event of the year?
Q: What's the one thing from the World Cup analysis that has stuck with you?
The sheer scale of it all, because this is the financial crime event of the year, with enormous implications for how money moves around across many countries and players in the tournament.
Re-Spin: What the 1MDB scandal tells us about how the world really works
Q: Was the China part Jho Low's idea or China's idea?
It appears to have been Jho Low's orchestration, designed to pull China into a broader web of influence, with others acting as willing co-conspirators, making it seem like it was China's plan.
Re-Spin: What the 1MDB scandal tells us about how the world really works
Q: Okay, the question was what was the Malaysian Prime Minister's incentive to go along with this?
Greed, control over resources, and a belief that access to a separate pool of funds could clean up politics, coupled with the allure of wealth and power that made corrupt funding feel justifiable at the time.
