  • Excellent pod

I heard Adam Smith on the Rest is History and came over and listened to an episode and now I’m hooked. The episode on Richard Hofstadter’s Paranoid Style was so good! This is such a great pod!

  • Wasted of time

Came for history, got politics… that didn’t age well. Out of touch which suggest if this person is a scholar he was educated by fools. No true sense of actual insight or even attempt to understand different MODERN/CURRENT political views… which I have no idea why they are even needed for historical storytelling which makes the commentary on past political stances suspect. Thankfully the episodes are short so I didn’t waste too much time. gave a second episode and try and five mins in I couldn’t ... more

1776 and the break up of the United States
Q: Who do you think this document was aimed at?
Caroline Janney notes the primary audience was the other slaveholding states, with efforts to persuade Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee to secede, and to present secession as a restoration of a constitutional order rather than a radical break.
1776 and the break up of the United States
Q: Tell us a little bit about that document.
Caroline Janney explains that the Declaration of the Immediate Causes for South Carolina's secession borrows heavily from the Declaration of Independence in form and rhetoric, but it reframes grievances to justify withdrawal from the Union and to rally slaveholding states around a new political project.
The idea of America in British politics
Q: What explains the enduring fascination Britain has with America across centuries?
Britain has long seen American ideas as both a mirror and a source of inspiration, drawing on revolutionary ideals, constitutional experimentation, and a sense that fundamental questions about democracy and power play out on American soil, even as Britain evaluates its own institutions.
Can federalism save American liberalism?
Q: Are we at an inflection point in the story of American federalism?
Yes, there are shifts in who is making federalism claims, with more currently coming from the left.
Hillary Rodham Clinton on how America can save itself
Q: Do we still believe that everything wrong with America can be put right with what's right with America?
Clinton affirms that the belief remains strong, citing recent electoral victories as signs of hope.
