Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Jenny Clarke and Herve Semukunzi
Q: What were the aims and design of the study conducted in Rwanda?
The study aimed to perform in-country validation of a serum-based mpox IgG ELISA, compare humoral immunity from natural infection versus vaccination, and assess background seropositivity. It was an observational, multicenter study with three cohorts to evaluate vaccinated, previously infected, and unexposed individuals.
Jenny Clarke and Herve Semukunzi
Q: Could you please tell us about the background information of the mpox Clade 1b outbreak in Africa and the situation in Rwanda?
The clade emerged as a distinct outbreak with higher transmission and mortality risk in certain regions; Rwanda reported its first cases in July 2024, with cross-border movement being a major challenge. The emphasis was on preparedness plans and leveraging regional collaboration to strengthen diagnostic and public health capacity.
Julia Moore Vogel and Danilo Buonsenso on long COVID
Q: What should be the future research, clinical, and funding priorities for long COVID?
There is an urgent need for increased funding, especially for trials including children and adolescents, and for continued focus on biomarkers and clinical support initiatives.
Julia Moore Vogel and Danilo Buonsenso on long COVID
Q: What is known about the pathophysiology of long COVID?
The pathophysiology is complex; it involves ongoing immune dysfunction, potential persistence of the virus in tissues, and chronic inflammatory responses which often remain neglected.
Julia Moore Vogel and Danilo Buonsenso on long COVID
Q: Long Covid has various definitions. Can you tell us a bit more on why this is and what are the definitions that have been widely used by the clinical research community?
The definitions are diverse due to the wide array of symptoms and experiences post-COVID-19; the current standard follows a broad approach by the National Academies due to the lack of specific markers.
