  • Excellent show

A while back, I had wondered if there was a podcast that did a retrospective focused on 90s comics. I was actually thinking about something that focused mostly on the early 90s extreme style stuff, but what I found with Iron Age was so much better.

First off, the idea of labeling this period from post-Bronze Age up until around 2001 the Iron Age is a great idea. I have no idea why we as comics fans continue to lump everything from the past 30-40 years as just “the modern age” when we don’t do ... more

  • Love the variety of topics covered from my fav era of comics!

I am from a certain age that the late 1980s to the 1990s was a pivotal time in comics for me. The Iron Age of Comics looks at a wide range of comics from this time period with a fair and balanced nuanced analysis. They cover the obvious tentpoles like Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen. But the show goes beyond the obvious and also covers the forgotten stories that made up the era. How many other comic podcasts take a serious look at Hawkworld or Green Lantern Emerald Dawn? None I could find.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Iron Mail: Listener Q&A
Q: Would you ever transition to video, and how do you feel about your own critic role in a visual medium?
They joke about video potential but affirm that criticism remains central; they value the podcast's accessibility and the balance between engaging content and the limitations of a purely visual medium.
Iron Mail: Listener Q&A
Q: How do you decide what to cover next or what to space out in episodes?
Decisions are driven by practicality, availability, reader suggestions, and strategic planning to mix big titles with lesser-known works, rather than following a strict one-series-through rule.
Iron Mail: Listener Q&A
Q: What is your dominant takeaway from this year's coverage of Iron Age material?
They learned that focusing on big crossovers can illuminate how different titles evolved differently, and that the era's “dumb decisions” often masked underlying creative impulses; the post-Iron Age media landscape also shaped how stories are told and marketed.
