  • Very Informative

I’ve been binge- listening to this podcast since I found it a week ago. I was a professional barefoot trimmer for 10 years before having kids and have been out of the scene for the past decade. This has been a great refresher for me and giving me the itch to get back into trimming! Thanks for the hard work of putting this together- so great to have this info easily accessible and presented in a non-preachy way. Hopefully it’s helping to make the changes a little more palatable for folks that hav... more

  • Absolutely love learning about the whole horse, starting at the foot. There is not a farrier way out where I live so I've had to take over full hoof care of my horses. This podcast has inspired and educated me. Thank you Alicia!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Equine Weight and Its Effect on Performance
Q: Have you seen a correlation between the weight and their performance?
Absolutely. I've seen ponies that start refusing at fences. They’re trying to avoid that landing that hurts. Shorten stride length, ponies that were covering the jumping line distances easily and suddenly aren't, can be related to foot soreness.
Equine Weight and Its Effect on Performance
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about your role in the professional equine world and what you do now and sort of your interest in the weight of the horses in your program?
I am a professional hunter jumper trainer, my focus is primarily on hunter ponies or almost exclusively on hunter ponies. I do a lot of sales and leasing, and I've been very cognizant of their weight as it relates to health and metabolic challenges.
Equine Diet for Healthy Hooves
Q: Is there anything else that owners can do or feed when it comes to hoof quality and health?
Owners should ensure their horse is getting a well-balanced diet, monitor metabolic health, and consider environmental conditions.
Equine Diet for Healthy Hooves
Q: How do we decide what formulations to give them?
We test our hay and learn about nutritional profiles to understand better how much protein and energy is being fed to horses.
Pain Indicators in the Ridden Horse with Dr. Sue Dyson
Q: So is this something where that developing this has that changed your perspective on horse behavior over the years?
I think I've been a very close observer of horses and recognized that when horses were uncomfortable, they tended to change their behavior.
