  • Jim Apple episode

Wow! So good! I am looking forward to more episodes with Jim Apple. I’m 63 and horses came back into my life when I was 46. I went from 0 horses to 6 horses in less than 18 months. I quickly learned that I was going to have to learn how to trim my horses’ feet. I’ve lived in 3 different states since then. If you’re very lucky, you might find a very skilled trimmer, one who has valid (data driven) reasons for why they trim the way they do. But IF you are fortunate to find one, they are often very... more

  • Very Informative

I’ve been binge- listening to this podcast since I found it a week ago. I was a professional barefoot trimmer for 10 years before having kids and have been out of the scene for the past decade. This has been a great refresher for me and giving me the itch to get back into trimming! Thanks for the hard work of putting this together- so great to have this info easily accessible and presented in a non-preachy way. Hopefully it’s helping to make the changes a little more palatable for folks that hav... more

Life After Laminitis
Q: Could you give a little information about your journey in hoof care and the area you service?
I'm Maggie Lambert, based in Southern Colorado, running Diamondback Farrier Services with my husband. I've been a farrier for about four years, passionate about working with horses in remote and backcountry settings, and I service local clients in the area and beyond.
Rehabbing Laminitis
Q: What role did diet and managing grazing play in the rehabilitation plan?
Grazing was controlled by building a dedicated track and reducing grass intake; nutritional adjustments included specific supplements (L-carnitine, L-glycine) and a carefully selected feed regimen to stabilize metabolic markers while monitoring liver enzymes and triglycerides.
Rehabbing Laminitis
Q: How did you adjust hoof care and trimming during the recovery process?
The trim strategy focused on realigning heels while keeping toes limited, minimizing trauma as the hoof grew, and using cloud boots for support; it required slow, incremental work and patience as the horse could only tolerate short foot holds during the painful phases.
Rehabbing Laminitis
Q: What were the key turning points in recognizing and addressing the laminitis in this pony?
Early subtle signs like toe flicks, stripe growth, and repeated stress rings flagged laminitis; collaboration with vets led to stepwise interventions including adjusted turnout, trimming, cloud boots, and eventual SGLT2 inhibitor therapy, which together shifted the trajectory from deterioration to recovery.
Is It Really Navicular? With Dr. David Ramey
Q: How much stock should we put into navicular bone changes on a sound horse?
Dr. Ramey suggests not much, as navicular changes don't always indicate that a horse will develop lameness in the future.
