  • My last straw

This is my last straw. Mongrel breeders are not breeders. They are profit making puppy makers being enabled by things like this. It is an insult to the dedication of preservation breeders. I am over your inane interviews. In addition, the woman who is the moderator is really poor at her job.

  • The podcast has become an infomercial

Although I was excited about Good Dog and it’s promise in the beginning, I feel like the podcast has become like an infomercial for a product. The decline of the podcast as well as not following through with their set out standards to rate breeders… which is certifying irresponsible breeders as Good breeders, has turned me off of Good Dog. It seems the business side of things and quest for mass appeal and customers has become more important than actually following through with promoting only goo... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Using Screening Health Tests
Q: How should breeders plan for late-onset conditions like degenerative myopathy or PRA when planning a breeding program?
PRA and DM have risk-based testing rather than certainties; in DM, two copies of the gene increases risk but does not guarantee paralysis, and breeding decisions should balance risk with maintaining genetic diversity and overall health, not relying on a single test.
Using Screening Health Tests
Q: Is it realistic to try to breed out luxating patella or should the goal be to reduce severity?
Breeding out completely is unlikely without identifying all the responsible genes, so the practical approach is to minimize risk by selecting sound patellas in sires and breeding only from the best litters in dams, accepting that some risk will remain.
Using Screening Health Tests
Q: Do you ever see breeders overlook any structural faults, often because the dog just looks pretty or everything looks okay?
Yes, this happens relatively frequently; the recommendation is to prioritize functional health over aesthetics when selecting breeding stock, and if a puppy is ugly but healthy and genetically sound, keep it rather than discarding it for looks.
The Spin on AI
Q: Can someone at home using a microscope get a sperm count, and would it be accurate?
It's possible with a hemocytometer if you have the proper materials, but without a lab setup it's very difficult to get reliable concentration measurements; professionals should perform spermiograms to ensure accuracy.
The Power of Genotype & Phenotype in Dog Breeding
Q: Does Merle coloration alone cause blindness, and can light eyes indicate future blindness?
Merle coloration itself does not cause blindness; blindness risk relates to pigment distribution and interaction with other genes. A single Merle allele plus other pigment-affecting genes can contribute to vision issues, so context with other genes matters.
