  • My last straw

This is my last straw. Mongrel breeders are not breeders. They are profit making puppy makers being enabled by things like this. It is an insult to the dedication of preservation breeders. I am over your inane interviews. In addition, the woman who is the moderator is really poor at her job.

  • The podcast has become an infomercial

Although I was excited about Good Dog and it’s promise in the beginning, I feel like the podcast has become like an infomercial for a product. The decline of the podcast as well as not following through with their set out standards to rate breeders… which is certifying irresponsible breeders as Good breeders, has turned me off of Good Dog. It seems the business side of things and quest for mass appeal and customers has become more important than actually following through with promoting only goo... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Genetic Diversity and Population Health
Q: What is the right way to remove a disease variant without shrinking the gene pool excessively?
Use genetic tests to avoid crossing carriers with carriers, retain the diversity that carriers contribute, and slowly replace carriers with non-carriers only when it's safe for the overall genetic health of the breed.
Genetic Diversity and Population Health
Q: What do conservation geneticists think breeders can learn from their perspective?
Conservation geneticists emphasize looking at distinct subpopulations and avoiding unnecessary mixing, using modern SNP/sequence tools to track diversity, and recognizing that some lineages may need to be preserved separately to maintain overall diversity.
Coefficient of Inbreeding
Q: Are all genetic tests created equal for COI calculations?
No. SNP-array-based tests are more comprehensive than older microsatellite panels;Genome-wide data provide more accurate COI estimates and reduce noise compared to smaller marker sets.
Coefficient of Inbreeding
Q: For breeds with limited gene pools, how should COI be approached?
In small or closed populations, COI will often be high due to limited diversity, so breeders should use COI tracking to slow erosion and consider outcrossing when possible to introduce diversity while balancing breed traits.
Coefficient of Inbreeding
Q: Where should the COI fit in decision making relative to health testing, temperament, structure, and type?
Breeders should prioritize avoiding carrier-carrier matings first, then use COI as a tiebreaker when two options have similar health and trait expectations; otherwise, aim to lower COI to protect genetic diversity.
