Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Talking Miniatures with Roman Lappat
Q: What advice do you give someone entering competitions for the first time?
Enter to understand yourself and your work; don't let imposter syndrome dictate your choices, and remember that medals are not a measure of worth—your craft and the joy you share matter more.
Talking Miniatures with Roman Lappat
Q: How has judging changed your perspective compared to competing?
Judging taught me the responsibility of shaping the field and valuing community experience; it also helped me see why some pieces succeed beyond sheer technical prowess.
Talking Miniatures with Roman Lappat
Q: Judge Roman, how do you approach winning a Golden Demon?
Focus on impact and storytelling, evaluate the strongest entries, and use a balanced approach that weighs both technical skill and emotional resonance rather than chasing medals alone.
Talking Miniatures with Lucas Williams
Q: How do you know when a piece is finished, especially in the context of a painterly style?
Finish is often determined by whether the piece feels alive to him, particularly if the eyes convey a presence that makes the viewer feel the character; if the eyes feel right, he considers the piece done.
Talking Miniatures with Lucas Williams
Q: Why do you prefer painting on larger scales, and how does that affect your approach to brushwork?
Larger scales give more space to express painterly intent and allow him to translate his bust-oriented techniques more freely. He can play with planes of light and visible brush strokes, creating textures that are hard to replicate on smaller scales, while still applying those principles when he does work at 28mm.
