  • Friendly and informative

As anyone who follows Ben on social media knows, he’s highly knowledgeable and entirely willing to share his expertise. It’s so nice to see someone who knows the secrets be willing to openly share - so much of the plant world is filled with experts who wish to gatekeep their knowledge for fear that someone will come along and steal it. Ben is creating a community of gardeners who are collaborative and happy to share.

S3-bonus bare root rose special with Mat Nicholas head gardener at Peter Beales roses
Q: How long should you keep bare root roses before planting if you can't plant right away?
Keep them hydrated by placing in a bucket of water or heal in them in soil, with the roots fully covered, for extended storage across days to months depending on timing, and make sure to rehydrate before planting.
S3-bonus bare root rose special with Mat Nicholas head gardener at Peter Beales roses
Q: Would you recommend a bare root rose plant over a potted rose plant?
Yes, bare root is generally preferable because it is easier to handle and storage takes less space; the plant performance once in the ground can be just as good as a potted rose if planted correctly.
S3-bonus bare root rose special with Mat Nicholas head gardener at Peter Beales roses
Q: Shall I bring bare root roses into the greenhouse or protect them more by potting?
No, there is no need to protect them in a greenhouse; they are dormant and can survive in outdoor conditions down to about minus 10 to minus 15 degrees. They should stay outside to harden off naturally and avoid premature growth that would be damaged by later cold snaps.
S4E6 Farmer Bailey Plugs
Q: Where can listeners find you online and how can they engage with your products?
The wholesale site is farmerbailey.com for growing information and US shipping, while the retail site is gardenclubplants.com; Instagram handles are provided as @FarmerBaileyPlugs and @GardenClubPlants.
S2E18 Matt Nicholas Head Gardener at Peter Beales Roses Norfolk
Q: What are the big upcoming shows and how do you plan for them?
He outlines the schedule for BBC Gardeners World Live, Hampton Court, and Sandringham, including propagation, stock management, and transport logistics to ensure ready displays.
