  • A Top enterprise networking podcast

You won’t go wrong adding first Packet Pushers’ network break as your first stop of the week for all things enterprise networking. Hosts are well researched and experienced, running through the stories of the week. The other shows are great too and more theme-specific.

  • Greg’s “Fart” and “Centaur” Metaphors Earn 5 Stars

    First NB episode of 2023:

Greg compares the ability to spot someone using a ChatGBT result as akin to being able to identify the guilty party in a silent but violent offense. 😆

Later in the episode, he compares the body of a Centaur to an AiOps model. 🤯

Been listening for years, great podcast, great group of gents. Keep ‘em coming! 🤘🏼

  • Great for a beginner like me

I’ve been listening for about a year now and great for me morning and afternoon commute.

I’m just getting into the IT world after working in OT (manufacturing automation) for a while. This keeps me up to date on the latest news and gives me technology topics to looks up later and provokes some thought. :)

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

HN823: Defining A Modern Network Service
Q: What makes a modern network service different from older definitions?
A modern service is end-to-end, multi-layer, and field-tested across diverse environments, with emphasis on business outcomes, cross-team collaboration, and continuous validation rather than just provisioning configuration.
TNO061: Networking Theory and Practice; Networking in the Classroom Today
Q: How do you distinguish between the rise of disaggregated networking and traditional vendor ecosystems in terms of operations and education?
He emphasizes the need for operations teams to plan for modularity, testing, and support in disaggregated environments, while also noting the value of teaching fundamentals like CSMA/CD, Dijkstra, and graph theory to prepare students for modern, automated networks.
PP106: Architecting for Wi-Fi 7, Zero Trust, PQC, and More
Q: What is the biggest architectural hurdle for enterprises adopting Wi-Fi 7?
The biggest hurdle is migrating to new cryptographic identities for devices and endpoints, including new cipher suites and 6 GHz restrictions, while coordinating across vendors, budgets, and existing architectures.
HN824: That’s Not a Job for an LLM: The Right Way to Apply AI to Network Operations (Sponsored)
Q: What is Kentik's AI Advisor, and how does it fit into an engineer's workflow?
AI Advisor is a capability that integrates telemetry, alerts, and a knowledge base to answer questions about network capacity, performance, and troubleshooting, functioning as a guided front end that augments human analysts rather than replacing them.
HN824: That’s Not a Job for an LLM: The Right Way to Apply AI to Network Operations (Sponsored)
Q: How should engineers think about determinism and AI in network operations?
Determinism is desirable for reproducible outcomes, but in practice LLMs aren't fully deterministic; with guardrails and constrained use, they can deliver repeatable, sensical results for specific domains while allowing some variability in less critical tasks.
