  • True Crime “minute”?

I wish this podcast would go back to the original format. “The True Crime Minute” isn’t even worth the trouble. Very disappointing.

Also, I miss Emily, though I enjoy hearing from Paul as well.

  • Generally Like

I enjoy the show for the most part but some of the questions Emily asks are a mile long with multiple tangents in between. Would love to see an English professor try to diagram some of her questions.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Part 2 | Polygamist Cult Leader Samuel Bateman: Psychological Warfare
Q: What was the most important or significant piece of evidence investigators had against Sam Bateman, and why did he plead rather than go to trial?
The discussion notes that prosecutors sought a solid federal case built on clear statutory elements, and that the reality of bringing trauma and victim testimony to trial against a charismatic leader made a plea advantageous for sparing victims from repeated testimony and preserving a record, even if later reflections showed the record as a whole could be argued differently.
Part 2 | Yuba County Five: Who Never Came Home?
Q: Was there an unknown person involved somehow, like a hitchhiker or someone who came across them that night?
The hosts discuss several leading theories, including possible encounters with locals or aggressors, but emphasize there is no definitive evidence pointing to a single culprit, and much remains speculation.
Genetic Genealogy Solves 1985 "Baby Boy Doe" Cold Case | True Crime Minute
Q: You've spent years researching this case and even wrote a book about it. What drew you to the Yuba County Five story and what did you want to uncover?
Wright describes how initial curiosity grew from pop-cultural references and a need to fill gaps left by earlier media coverage, leading him to visit libraries, pursue archival data, and speak with families and experts to rebuild a more nuanced narrative of the disappearance.
Part 1 | Yuba County Five: Why Did They Abandon a Working Car?
Q: How did Tony Wright get involved with researching the case?
Tony Wright described discovering related content online, researching archives, and ultimately authoring a book after finding that no comprehensive work existed, giving him a foundation to discuss evidence, misconceptions, and new theories with the host.
Part 1 | Yuba County Five: Why Did They Abandon a Working Car?
Q: What makes this case particularly puzzling for investigators and researchers?
The combination of multiple men with intellectual disabilities, a strict pursuit of a basketball tournament, a long detour into the mountains, contradictory eyewitness accounts, and sparse physical evidence all contribute to a patchwork of theories with no definitive explanation.
