  • Generally Like

I enjoy the show for the most part but some of the questions Emily asks are a mile long with multiple tangents in between. Would love to see an English professor try to diagram some of her questions.

  • One of my favorites

Emily Compagno is excellent!!! So bright and articulate. This podcast is one of my favorites! The only criticism is that a lot of the episodes are too short.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Biotech Fraud: Inside the Gregory Davis Hit
Q: What were the key breakthroughs in connecting the hitman to the masterminds behind the plot?
Crucial breakthroughs included tracing the 911 call, tracking the purchase and use of a specific phone at a Walmart, and linking the hitman to the group through financial records and surveillance footage; these elements helped connect Jerry Banks to Sirhat Gamruchu and others.
The Grandma Who Hired a Hitman: Donna Adelson’s Life Sentence
Q: What were the key pieces of evidence that tied Donna Adelson to the plot?
A combination of motive shown by emails about moving the kids, the extortion bump, and wiretapped conversations that traced connections from Donna to Charlie and the hitmen, plus the fact that she discussed relocating to a country with no extradition as the plot unfolded.
The Grandma Who Hired a Hitman: Donna Adelson’s Life Sentence
Q: Walk us through how it took so long to solve his murder and bring five people to justice, I believe.
The case was built in steps rather than a single courtroom reveal. Investigators started with one hitman, who turned, then followed leads through another hitman and the intermediary before reaching Donna Adelson, tying the entire conspiracy together through a combination of recorded calls, financial records, and admissions from witnesses.
Murdaugh Conviction Overturned: New Trial Ordered
Q: How might the retrial differ in practice given the appellate ruling and the concerns about juror influence?
Ritter explains there will likely be a different judge, potentially a streamlined prosecution approach, and tighter limits on using financial crime evidence to avoid juror bias, with the defense possibly changing teams and timelines.
Murdaugh Conviction Overturned: New Trial Ordered
Q: First of all, your reaction when you heard the news that the South Carolina Supreme Court decided just to do away with the two double murder convictions.
Joshua Ritter says the decision was shocking but understandable within the framework of law, recognizing it as a rare but correct outcome to ensure an impartial retrial.
