I’m a practicing Episcopalian deeply interested the history and theology of my faith. I am in a single digit %age of Christians. Every worship service ion the Episcopal liturgy includes a reading from the Old Testament, the psalms and The New Testament. The “cultural Christians” are not well read. The Protestant style of religion is not well informed. We share history and styles

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Nicholas Lemann on Being Jewish in the Shadow of the American South
Q: What led you to focus on this line of research now?
A combination of journalistic curiosity about a rich archival trove and a personal interest in understanding his family's history and its implications for identity and belonging.
Nicholas Lemann on Being Jewish in the Shadow of the American South
Q: Can you give us a quick snapshot of the book?
It is a family history, more personal than his prior work, built from an unusually large archive of papers that trace five generations and explore what home means across time.
Fran Fabriczki on “Homelooseness” and a Love Letter to Los Angeles
Q: How did you approach writing from a child's perspective in Mila?
Mila was crafted as relatable and not a genius child; she's average at school and violin, but deeply observant of social dynamics, which creates a nuanced, emotionally honest lens for the reader.
Fran Fabriczki on “Homelooseness” and a Love Letter to Los Angeles
Q: Can you summarize what Porcupines is about and what sparked the idea for the novel?
It's about a single mother, Sonia, and her daughter Mila, on a chaotic LA-to-San Francisco journey, with past and present timelines weaving together. The spark came from a love letter to LA and a desire to explore family, memory, and the immigrant experience through a character inspired by the author's own mother.
Matti Friedman on the Stories that Built a People
Q: What led you to telling this story? How did you get here?
Friedman describes a long interest in marginal yet meaningful stories about Israel and Jewish history, culminating in researching the parachutists after a friend suggested the line of inquiry; he sought to reveal how such narratives reflect larger questions about identity and humanity.
