Pulse Check: Tales from a Community College AI Think Tank — Part 1
Q: What advice do you have for listeners looking to build their own AI on-ramps?
Create spaces for safe exploration, avoid over-policing tools, maintain guardrails to manage risk, and foster a culture of experimentation through leadership support, mavericks, mavens, and ongoing communication; it's important to show that you can't AI wrong and to emphasize curiosity and discernment.
Pulse Check: Tales from a Community College AI Think Tank — Part 1
Q: What does AI literacy look like the way you use it at FLCC, and what do people need to know to feel ready to use AI responsibly?
AI literacy is about empowering people to use AI while understanding limits and strengths, focusing on human-led inquiry, ethics, prompting basics, and critical thinking rather than teaching step-by-step job-specific procedures; the goal is to enable responsible use across domains.
Pulse Check: Tales from a Community College AI Think Tank — Part 1
Q: Hi. Thanks. Take us back to those early moments. AI enters the scene in higher education. What were you hearing from students, staff, employers, and the public that made AI literacy feel urgent in our community?
There was a broad sense of urgency from internal stakeholders and industry partners who saw AI as a critical, imminent shift; employers demanded AI literacy as a core skill, while students wanted to experiment and prepare for the future, creating tension between cutting AI from curricula and embracing it as essential.
The 13 Milliseconds That Decide Your Enrollment Funnel
Q: Can you share a real example of a homepage that missed the mark and what was done to fix it?
A case from Massachusetts (a state with many schools) showed a missing value proposition, wonky navigation, and an almost impossible search; after a thorough discovery, they redesigned the homepage, introduced an AI-powered search, and within a year saw a substantial increase in deposits year over year, underscoring the importance of a clear value proposition and user-friendly navigation.
The 13 Milliseconds That Decide Your Enrollment Funnel
Q: What should a CMO look at in the first few seconds of landing on a homepage to know if they're on the right track or if they have a problem?
Focus on a four-part gut check: the first impression (does the site convey what it's actually like to be there, avoiding the bulletin-board feel of just pictures of buildings), ease of navigation (is information easy to find without dead ends), quality of visual assets (do visuals authentically convey the essence of the institution), and brand emulation (does the site clearly reflect the institution's differentiating brand) using the thumb-test in the upper left corner to verify recognition.
