In mid-2026 we’re experiencing the largest energy crisis the world has ever faced. The sudden and prolonged disappearance of one-fifth of the global supply of oil and LNG, set in motion by the Iran war we covered in Episode #272, has sent import cost... more

For years, transition skeptics have argued that what’s really happening globally is “energy addition,” where renewables are piling on top of fossil fuels rather than pushing them aside. The data that’s just landing from 2025 finally puts that argumen... more

In the sunniest parts of the world, solar and batteries are already the cheapest way to build new power generation capacity on an unsubsidized full system cost basis, and that cost advantage is expanding quickly.

The attacks on Iran by US and Israel have touched off a regional conflict that has resulted in the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world’s oil and LNG transits, and is doing severe, ongoing damage to oil and gas infrastructu... more

  • Exceptional

Best climate podcast. The negative reviews even prove how good Chris is - my guy out here pissing off the tech bros and nuclear boys with his vastly detailed, incredibly clear-eyed analysis - keep going!!

  • Decent info, but anti-solution

Gives reasonably up-to-date information on the energy sector and Darius technologies but it’s ultimately anti-solution and anti-transition when it comes to opinion segments. Unfortunately, this ends up having the same effect as advocating for more oil production.

  • Very biased

Biased, unbalanced. Not helpful for creating a constructive dialog on nuclear energy’s pros and cons.

  • Technically deep but topically broad

Thank you Chris for you and your team's commitment to produce this high-quality and balanced show. It's been an entertaining and quality way to get up a steep learning curve. I find the technical depth of the discussions very helpful. And the breadth of topics covered is amazing but necessary to truly understand how so many things are related to and influential in the transition torenewable energy. I appreciate the way you host guests who have differing opinions from your own, that you admit tha... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

[Episode #274] – Global Electricity Review 2026
Q: So does this report give us any indication of when the day might come when all emissions start to decline beyond just the power sector?
The discussion suggests that while the power sector is already showing declines due to rapid clean power deployment and electrification, a broader, economy-wide decline will depend on sustained decarbonization across transport, industry, and other sectors, along with continued growth in clean generation and electrification to offset higher demand.
[Episode #273] – Solar and Batteries Can Power the World
Q: What about the future beyond 2030?
If costs for solar and batteries continue to fall, the analysis suggests we could achieve 95 to 99 percent penetration in many regions by 2030 and beyond, with wind and other renewables helping in northern latitudes and providing robust pathways for deeper decarbonization in the longer term.
[Episode #273] – Solar and Batteries Can Power the World
Q: What are the practical cost implications to reach 90 percent?
For two-thirds of the population, the full system cost to reach 90 percent is around 60–70 euros per megawatt hour, with solar and battery contributing the main share and a small portion allocated to backup fuel; LCOE alone for solar is much lower, but the inclusion of storage and backup raises the all-in cost to a level that remains competitive with gas in many regions.
[Episode #273] – Solar and Batteries Can Power the World
Q: How did you expand on the EMBER analysis?
We adjusted the original EMBER approach by expanding the geographic scope beyond 12 cities to reflect where the majority of people live near the equator, reducing seasonal variability and showing that 90 percent can be achieved at costs under 80 euros per megawatt hour for most regions, with detailed breakdowns for solar, storage, and backup.
[Episode #272] – Global Energy Crisis 2026
Q: What happens if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed for an extended period?
Prices would remain elevated and the market would need to rely on rerouting and stock releases, with refining margins and incentives shifting as inventories tighten and physical flows lag behind futures curves.
