  • Whoa

Evidence based medicine. To practice this, you need to hear the evidence. To live this you need to hear the unbiased, unfiltered truth of the research. My mind has been changed and my beliefs have been supported. Sometimes it hurts, sometimes it’s vilifying. Kudos. Keep changing the world.

  • This podcast fills a huge hole in our profession

The EMS lighthouse project features modern trials and studies, and breaks them down into palatable sets of information that applies to your practice every day as a paramedic. You owe it to your patients to be well informed about evidence based concepts relating to prehospital medicine. What information would normally take years to trickle down onto the streets is presented right away for us monkeys who have difficulty interpreting medical journals. Love it guys, keep it up

  • Good science - not just for nerds

Excellent & pertinent podcast. Solid way for EMS professionals to learn why we do what we do. Down to earth but not "dumbed-down" explanations. Thanks!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep109 - Smida Defends Resuscitation, Part I
Q: How did you approach handling missing data and confounding in such large registry datasets?
They used complete case analyses for weight data, explored imputation cautiously, and emphasized confounding by indication with careful modeling; they also adjusted for monitor type and waveform differences and used mixed effects models to address agency-level clustering and other confounders.
Ep109 - Smida Defends Resuscitation, Part I
Q: What were the four primary aims or questions your dissertation addressed?
The four core questions addressed were: defibrillation energy dose, airway device choice (iGel vs KING), antiarrhythmic selection (amiodarone vs lidocaine), and vasopressor choice post-ROSC (epinephrine vs norepinephrine), all analyzed using target trial emulation and large EMS datasets to approximate randomized comparisons.
Ep109 - Smida Defends Resuscitation, Part I
Q: What is your PhD in and how does it relate to the work you've been doing?
The PhD is in Clinical and Translational Science, blending public health, epidemiology, and biostatistics, with a focus on structuring observational cardiac arrest research and applying rigorous methods like target trial emulation to answer practical questions about prehospital resuscitation.
Ep107 - 3 Papers With Dr Crowe
Q: Remle, why don't you talk to us about your thoughts on the paper, and particularly about potential confounders here?
Resuscitation research tends to be really challenging, and I do want to commend the authors for their work to look all the way through hospital outcomes and the trauma registry outcomes in particular.
Ep 104 - The IV vs IO Trials
Q: What do the recent trials say about the use of IV versus IO access during cardiac arrest?
The recent trials indicate that there is no significant difference in outcomes between IV and IO access for patients in cardiac arrest.
