Your AI-Powered Data Science Toolkit
Q: What do you think? So in this, we are, yeah, so with all these AI tools available, do we still, I mean, are we safe with our jobs? Like, do we still need data scientists? And does it, I mean, does it make sense to go to university and study these sciences?
Colopy says he cannot reliably predict what will happen in ten years. He expects people to shift toward work AI cannot do reliably, while noting uncertainty about model capability, economics, and how AI will affect different jobs. He advises practitioners to learn the tools and stay adaptable.
Your AI-Powered Data Science Toolkit
Q: Where do those effects actually show up, and where does the multiplier stop? So what can one data scientist now deliver that previously took a team and what still genuinely requires human judgment?
AI can help a data scientist take on adjacent technical tasks that previously required another specialist, such as writing SQL. More complex work requires substantial setup and validation, and scientific reasoning and experimental design still need human oversight.
The Secret Power of Data Evangelist
Q: Do you use AI tools for formatting data? ... Do you think it can get better or do you use any tool or can recommend any AI tool that is suitable for that?
Stevenson says teams should share the work rather than expect one person to master every tool. He recommends using Excel for basic cleaning, asking others for help with automation and learning AI only when there is sufficient time and need.
The Secret Power of Data Evangelist
Q: Is it true also for clinical trials data and you see space for improvement in that area?
Stevenson says he has no clinical-trial experience, but believes better data management may be possible. He explains that process statisticians focus on variation and that single measurements make repeatability difficult to assess.
