Each episode draws on two core lenses:

Hidden forces behind history—royal murders, lost colonies, financial systems, modern elites, NGOs, propaganda, and the quiet mechanisms that shape events long before they reach the headlines.

And the Roman pattern—the idea that... more

  • Content is interesting, editing is a struggle

Content is very interesting, but multiple times per episode you can hear the speaker make a mistake or not like the way a sentence went, then tell the editor “I’ll do that again”.

Kind of surprised at the poor editing in a company focused on podcasts.

  • Pretty good

Pretty good podcast I like the content and it’s good information but I really wish he would stop talking like Gavin Newsom with all the pauses and the brakes he doesn’t need

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Slaves Opened the Gates of Rome (Not Barbarians)
Q: So, could you walk us through Anglo-Saxon England in 1065, the year before the conquest, and explain how valuable it was that three rulers were competing for it?
There were three highly capable contenders—Harold Godwinson, William of Normandy, and Harald Hardrada—each with strong armies and legitimate claims, and England at the time was a centralized, monetized state with a functioning admin and rich resources, making it a prize worth fighting over.
Coins Don't Lie—Here's What Killed Rome
Q: What was happening to coins in that era of the third century crisis?
The silver content declined over time, the denarius was debased, and trust in the currency eroded as coins were minted with less silver and more base metals, leading people to seek alternative forms of value and trade.
Did Diocletian Save Rome… or Break It?
Q: Did Diocletian save Rome, or did his actions simply delay collapse?
The guest sees mixed outcomes: economically destructive policies and brutal persecutions aside, the tetrarchic structure can be seen as a lifeboat that preserved governance long enough for the late antique world to adapt, with Constantine ultimately leveraging those reforms to build a new order.
Did Diocletian Save Rome… or Break It?
Q: What is the core impact of Diocletian's reforms on the Roman state today?
Colin Elliott argues the reforms created a durable political framework—the Tetrarchy and a militarized, bureaucratic system—that stabilized the empire in the short term and provided a model for multi-emperor governance, even if the system eventually dissolved.
Cesare Borgia's Rise and Fall—The Blueprint for Power
Q: Is Machiavelli glorifying a lost cause or warning us about power's traps?
The exploration suggests Machiavelli's work could be interpreted as both a glorification and a warning, depending on how one views Borgia's tactics and ultimate failure.
