5 Rules for Starting Your Own Color Grading Company ft. David Tomiak
Q: What has been essential for growing a post house in a competitive market?
Maintaining a clear north star, investing in people (like an early conform artist), building a space that supports collaboration across color and sound, and focusing on high-quality, festival-ready work that can be showcased and talked about within the local and broader film community.

Q: How do you approach LUT design for a high-end project like Eternity?
I start with a modular LUT strategy based on robust DRMs/DRTs, test against archival references, then break out the LUT into controllable elements so we can refine on a per-scene basis without locking us into a single preset. The goal is to support the story and maintain flexibility for on-set and post collaboration.

Q: What was the turning point that led to founding Elemental Post?
The downturn of the pandemic gave us time to ideate on a combined color and sound facility. That momentum, along with a shared vision with my partner Matt Drake, culminated in launching Elemental in September 2020 as a finishing-focused house where we could bring filmmakers' visions to life with deep collaboration.

Q: How did your early career shift after the accident influence where you are today?
The accident forced me to pivot from direct camera work to color grading, which revealed a whole different way to tell stories through imagery. That shift, plus the early hands-on learning with local DPs and directors, laid the foundation for building a post shop focused on craft, collaboration, and long-term growth.
