Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Aubrey Bergauer on the power of embracing change
Q: What is the main challenge you see facing the industry in the next five years?
The guest expects that AI will require organizations to decide whether to embrace and learn about it or ignore it, emphasizing that the tool can improve efficiency and must be learned through hands-on use rather than theory.
Jessica Phillips, Graduate Studies Faculty at Juilliard and Clarinettist at The Met, on bridging the gap between conservatoire training and the reality of the industry
Q: What gives you hope for the future of classical music, and where do you see opportunity?
My hope comes from the students who are designing their own paths, proposing innovative projects, and demanding cross-genre collaboration. They bring fresh perspectives, digital fluency, and a readiness to experiment, which suggests a future where orchestras, educators, and funders work together to create meaningful, accessible experiences that extend beyond traditional concert formats.
Jessica Phillips, Graduate Studies Faculty at Juilliard and Clarinettist at The Met, on bridging the gap between conservatoire training and the reality of the industry
Q: If you could change one thing in the industry, what would it be and why?
I would create a centralized, collaborative information hub—an open clearinghouse—where musicians, educators, and organizations can connect, share best practices, and coordinate resources. This would help people leverage existing work, reduce duplication, and accelerate the industry-wide shift toward more sustainable, cross-disciplinary models that support musician entrepreneurship.
Hannah Seymour and Sinéad Walsh from EMPOWER on building ecosystems to promote gender equity
Q: What does the future hold for Empower?
Plans include another March tour with new venues, expanding Opus Her into a longer scheme, growing the performance schedule, and mentoring the next generation of leaders and artists.
Hannah Seymour and Sinéad Walsh from EMPOWER on building ecosystems to promote gender equity
Q: Why is the ecosystem model important for Empower and for equity in music?
The guests explain that having performance, commissioning, advocacy, and community under one roof creates cross-pollination and longer-term pathways, moving beyond tokenistic approaches to real systemic change.
