  • Number 1 film podcast!

The Cinematologists sits perfectly in the space between academic and accessible. Although it's produced by film scholars it never feels like a lecture, but benefits so much from the knowledge and understanding the two hosts can bring to their discussions. The show inspires me, deepens my love and understanding of film, and has introduced me to plenty new favourites that had completely evaded me.

  • An accessible pathway into contemporary film thought

The podcast description references the hosts’ academic backgrounds, but I’ve found myself, as someone poorly engaged with film theory, taking so much from this podcast. That only happens because the hosts want to share their passion and insights about film in an accessible and approachable way. Something that comes across in every episode.

I’ve started playing an intellectual game with myself where I’ll listen to the podcast, watch the films being reviewed and develop a counter argument to the ... more

  • Berlinale Festival Report #1

Enjoyed your first podcast from Berlinale very much. I like that you don't get into the weeds too much since we listeners have not seen the films. Joseph Owen is an insightful and enjoyable reviewer. Please have him on again. Savina is film academic reviewer smart and interesting to have her particular point of view.

  • Volume is so low

Great to listen to these guys and their guests talk about film but the volume is so low it is actually really difficult.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Mario and Mandela Van Peebles (Outlaw Posse and the African American Western)
Q: How's the director-actor dynamics? Are there parallels with the father-son dynamics or is it very professional going on here?
We've worked together a couple of times. We don't always get to play father and son if we do act together. But this was one of those rare chances.
Mario and Mandela Van Peebles (Outlaw Posse and the African American Western)
Q: I was thinking about that idea, it's really a sort of profound idea that I think is just one of the horrific things that you can imagine when it comes to thinking about what slavery was like.
That scene especially, Decker's gone through most of his life having this animosity towards his father for not being a father that he wanted him to be.
Mario and Mandela Van Peebles (Outlaw Posse and the African American Western)
Q: Were there particular things that influenced you to revisit?
I think that Posse, we had a great cast. But on Outlaw Posse, we have an amazing cast. And... there were some real badass sisters in the West, like Stagecoach Mary, for Whoopi Goldberg to play that role.
Mario and Mandela Van Peebles (Outlaw Posse and the African American Western)
Q: Was it TV shows? Was it movies? Where's your sort of love for the Western genre come from?
America made more Westerns than any other genre of film, but in the early Westerns, typically folks of color were pretty marginalized.
Small Things Like These (w/director Tim Mielants)
Q: What was your introduction to this project?
Mielants mentions his relationship with Cillian Murphy and how it led them to adapt the book into a film focused on personal grief.
