  • My ‘Go To’ for Carpentry & Joinery.

Thank you Robin for years of useful, interesting and entertaining content. My favourite podcasts have actually been when you’ve had no guests on and instead spoken of your own experiences in the trade. I’ve found your words to be honest, down to earth and although very informative, the thing I’ve taken most from them is the lift in confidence they have given me in my own work. Working as a sole trader in this industry myself, it’s encouraging when I can identify with the words of someone who has... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Are The CITB Fit For Purpose? & Addressing Criticism From SMEs
Q: What opportunities exist for SMEs to participate in funding and decision-making?
Hewitt and Hathrell-Good highlight SME advisory boards, Industry Impact Fund, and consultant opportunities to ensure SME voices inform training policies, with a call to action for listeners to participate in consultations.
Are The CITB Fit For Purpose? & Addressing Criticism From SMEs
Q: What changes have you made to funding to engage more small and micro businesses?
Madden explains that the levy is the same, but the funding mix has shifted to engage more small players, reducing some short courses in favor of apprenticeships and qualifications that drive competence; there is ongoing simplification and a push to provide mentoring and on-site support.
Are The CITB Fit For Purpose? & Addressing Criticism From SMEs
Q: What is your reaction to criticisms that the CITB is not fit for purpose and how do you define its role?
Madden emphasizes that CITB's purpose is to ensure a quality training pipeline and to support both new entrants and the current workforce; the organization has not reduced funding but shifted it toward more impactful funding lines like apprenticeships and NVQs, while acknowledging the need for simplification and better signposting for SMEs.
Where Is The Value?
Q: How have profits and prices changed from your early career to now?
Sean and Calum discuss how prices and margins have tightened, with materials cost inflation and labor costs rising while the rates paid by builders and clients have stagnated. They contrast early, higher earnings with modern pricing pressures and emphasize the importance of calculating true costs, including van and tool maintenance, insurance, and holidays, to preserve profitability.
Where Is The Value?
Q: What were your circumstances that led you up to taking on site work initially?
Calum explains that he started in domestic work alongside his father, shifting to site work due to opportunity, and later moved into new-builds and second fixes where pay varied based on hours and the ability to work long days. He highlights the allure and risks of high earnings from overtime but notes the instability of rate structures and the temptation to push for more hours to maximize take-home pay.
