  • My ‘Go To’ for Carpentry & Joinery.

Thank you Robin for years of useful, interesting and entertaining content. My favourite podcasts have actually been when you’ve had no guests on and instead spoken of your own experiences in the trade. I’ve found your words to be honest, down to earth and although very informative, the thing I’ve taken most from them is the lift in confidence they have given me in my own work. Working as a sole trader in this industry myself, it’s encouraging when I can identify with the words of someone who has... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Psychology of Pricing Work
Q: Is there a time where you find yourself getting so into a project that you spend more time than you might have allowed?
Gary shares that deep involvement happens with challenging designs, which increases time and cost, but emphasizes balancing ambition with realistic pricing and client expectations.
The Psychology of Pricing Work
Q: Right. So when you face to face with a client, how can we help those clients appreciate that we need to work for a profit, not just wages?
The guests discuss framing price around value and costs, not just labor, and using clear communication and examples to show why certain details cost more, including materials and time.
The Psychology of Pricing Work
Q: So how do you account for that in the price you give to your customers?
Derek explains that pricing evolves with experience, market conditions, and ongoing evaluation of overheads, with monthly or frequent re-assessment to ensure accuracy.
What Could AI Mean For The Trade?
Q: What are your thoughts on whether office jobs will be replaced by AI, and what does that mean for trades like carpentry?
Both guests agree that many office tasks will be automated, but skilled trades with practical problem-solving and hands-on capabilities will still be needed; AI should be seen as a tool to augment rather than replace meaningful craft and judgment.
Apprenticeship stories from the trade
Q: What was the experience like progressing through the Screwfix Apprentice competition to the finals?
Rhys describes the application, semifinal video, and final tasks, including creating a video and inventing a tool, and the mix of excitement and nerves involved.
