I’ve found your words to be honest, down to earth and although very informative, the thing I’ve taken most from them is the lift in confidence they have given me in my own work. Working as a sole trader in this industry myself, it’s encouraging when I can identify with the words of someone who has... more

Robin Clevett Talks To Award Winning Carpenters & Joiners About Their Road To Success
Q: How did you differentiate yourself when restoration work came in, given the expectation for traditional methods?
We focus on showing up with tangible samples, educating clients about the value of hand-cut and hand-finished work, and patiently explaining why a slower, more careful approach yields better, longer-lasting results.
Are You Ready For This Big Change Coming in April?
Q: What happens if someone makes a mistake or misses a deadline under MDT?
Craig explains a shift to a points-based penalty system that nudges users before penalties apply, with initial year exemptions for quarterly updates to ease transition, and emphasizes timely quarterly submissions to avoid end-of-year issues.
Are You Ready For This Big Change Coming in April?
Q: What software do people need to get a grip with and how can they choose?
He notes there are many options, from spreadsheets with MDT recognition to full bookkeeping apps, some linking to bank feeds; GOV.UK has a tool to help you find software recognized for making tax digital.
Are You Ready For This Big Change Coming in April?
Q: So first of all, making tax digital is going to affect sole traders and landlords. What's the thresholds and what does this mean?
Craig explains the phased rollout: those with gross income or turnover over 50,000 in the 24-25 tax year enter MDT from April 2026, with subsequent thresholds at 30,000 and 20,000 in later years; it requires digital records, quarterly updates via MDT-compatible software, and pre-populated year-end returns to simplify compliance.
The Psychology of Pricing Work
Q: Is there a time where you find yourself getting so into a project that you spend more time than you might have allowed?
Gary shares that deep involvement happens with challenging designs, which increases time and cost, but emphasizes balancing ambition with realistic pricing and client expectations.
