Talking with Ethan Chittick about The Reality of Running a Subcontracting Business in Construction
Q: What would you change in how subcontractors operate or in their relationships with clients to improve outcomes?
Do what you say you're going to do; follow through on promises, ensure you can actually deliver labor and materials as scheduled, and build proper infrastructure—estimating, project oversight, and performance-led foremen—to reduce friction between parties.
Talking with Ethan Chittick about The Reality of Running a Subcontracting Business in Construction
Q: What does your current business look like today in terms of structure and markets you operate in?
We run two main arms: B&E Built focusing on aged care and small-to-mid rise education spaces, and Commercial Carpentry tackling high-rise apartment work and related scope; we've built teams around repeatable processes to enable volume and consistency.
Talking with Ethan Chittick about The Reality of Running a Subcontracting Business in Construction
Q: What got you into the industry in the first place, and how did you transition from trades to running a business?
I started as a tradesperson because I needed to be outside and wanted to work, eventually moving into residential work and then semi-commercial projects; over time I saw the opportunity in subcontracting and built B&E Built with a partner, growing from a couple of builders to a business with a dedicated team, and I gradually shifted from on-site work to leadership, systems, and management to scale.
Talking with Seamus Egan about Leadership, Resilience and Navigating Construction’s Toughest Moments
Q: What was the most challenging moment in your leadership journey and how did you navigate it?
Seamus describes a period of extreme pressure during which many colleagues stepped up as leaders. He emphasizes relying on core family support, intuition, and trusted professional advice to minimize damage and guide the organization through administration, while keeping focus on employees and clients.
Talking with Scott Clements about Growing an Engineering Firm, Attracting Talent, and Embracing AI in Construction
Q: What got you into engineering, Scott?
Scott shares that he was encouraged by his father, who recognized his aptitude for physics, science, and mathematics, leading him to pursue engineering.
