The game we know as Contract Bridge departed from 'whist' with the creation of 'Biritch' (or Russian Whist) in the 19th century, and evolved through the late 19th and early 20th centuries to form the present game. The Bridge Zone is a radio show and podcast encouraging fellow Bridge players to share the passion that enthusiasts have in playing this challenging game.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Bridge Zone - 25-02-2026
Q: Okay, I was just going to ask, so if you're unsure of whether you should be thinking about waiting and then calculating the match point, is that when you get to the point where you say, actually, I'm going to poll?
Polling is not a big fan of mine; I prefer relying on my own judgment, though polling exists in some director contexts. It's hard to get exact parity across respondents, so I generally lean toward making a judgment call rather than waiting for a poll to decide.
The Bridge Zone - 13-05-2026
Q: What does it mean if your partner jumps to two hearts over one diamond in a typical two over one system?
It's discussed as a common misunderstanding; the host explains typical interpretations and why a system card is essential to prevent miscommunication, including the need to confirm what each bid means with regular partners.
