  • Love it!

I just discovered The Book Show and am enjoying it so much! I love hearing some of my favorite authors like Billy Collins (the definition of poetry is awesome), Kaveh Akbar (I'm a huge fan!), and Scott Turow (who knew he had a Chicago or Michigan accent (I think)? Looking forward to catching up! (PS - Joe Donahue sounds like David Letterman, right?!)

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Louise Erdrich - Python's Kiss
Q: What was it like to go back and reread and evaluate these stories and put them together again?
She describes a careful process of updating files, choosing which pieces to keep, and recognizing how some stories evolved over time, with a sense that the collection functions like a living archive rather than a fixed compilation.
Louise Erdrich - Python's Kiss
Q: Give us a sense of how this particular collection came about.
Erdrich explains she spent over twenty years writing these standalone stories, sometimes revisiting them and sometimes expanding them into other works, and that the book grew out of conversations with her daughter about visualizing each piece as part of a cohesive, special object.
Anna Quindlen - More Than Enough
Q: You mentioned the DNA ancestry twist early on. How did that idea evolve into broader questions about family and belonging?
The DNA test served as a catalyst to interrogate what truly constitutes family—whether it's blood relations or the people we choose to care for. The book expands the concept of family to include friends and community, emphasizing chosen kinship.
Anna Quindlen - More Than Enough
Q: To start off, let's talk a little bit about Polly because she's at the center of this, obviously. And there's so many beautiful relationships that she has with different people throughout the novel. What drew you to her as a character?
Polly is a teacher whose work often goes unrecognized, yet she is the emotional center of the story. Quindlen explains she wanted to pay tribute to teachers and to explore how women balance career, motherhood, and friendships, showing resilience and complexity in everyday life.
Tayari Jones - Kin
Q: Tell us about the setting Honeysuckle, Louisiana and what you wanted to explore there beyond the surface of their lives.
Honeysuckle serves as a microcosm of the South I knew, a place where small-town dynamics, family history, and the pull of larger cities collide, allowing the characters to grow through proximity to education, ambition, and a complex sense of community.
