Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL): Managing Treatment and Finding Balance
Q: What should patients know about side effects and how to manage them with BTK inhibitors?
Elise notes that BTK inhibitors are generally well tolerated, with common side effects including diarrhea, bruising, infections, and occasional cardiac concerns with some compounds; most centers provide comprehensive education and encourage patients to report even small symptoms promptly so they can be managed. Communication with the care team is key.
Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL): Managing Treatment and Finding Balance
Q: Could you tell us what options are generally available for frontline or first-line treatment of CLL?
Elise explains that frontline options include time-limited combination regimens (BTK inhibitor plus BCL2 inhibitor, such as Venetoclax, sometimes with a monoclonal antibody) or continuous BTK inhibitor-based therapy, with choices tailored to the patient. The NCCN guidelines support these approaches, with patient-specific considerations and pathways like watchful waiting for some cases.
A Young Adult Story: Cancer, Connection, and Life After Treatment
Q: Could you talk about fertility planning and what you decided to do?
My doctor advised freezing sperm before treatment due to potential fertility impact. Although the sample didn't all survive the thaw, we pursued IVF and welcomed our baby girl, highlighting both the uncertainties and possibilities in fertility after cancer.
A Young Adult Story: Cancer, Connection, and Life After Treatment
Q: Did you have to take time off work during treatment?
No, I was able to work through treatment, managing days that were more difficult and prioritizing activity and rest to stay functional.
A Young Adult Story: Cancer, Connection, and Life After Treatment
Q: How did treatment go and did it affect your life?
I underwent Brentuximab plus AVD chemotherapy for six cycles over six months; it was tough but I stayed upbeat, maintained some work, and incorporated routines like sauna, cold plunges, and exercise to stay as normal as possible.
