Hugh has a gift for drawing out the human side of exploration - the moments of doubt, triumph and humour that do not make it into the official logs.

  • A Must-Listen for History and Adventure Lovers!

I’m a big listener of The Rest is History and History Hit, so I’m usually pretty picky about what I add to my roster. This first episode about Mallory’s Everest climb really hooked me. It’s well-produced and covers the adventure side of history in a way I haven’t really seen other shows do yet. It’s an interesting niche and I’m definitely sticking with it. Worth a listen if you're into exploration stories!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Climbing Mont Blanc like it’s 1838: Lise Wortley
Q: What does it take to climb Mont Blanc like it was in 1838, with the same historic clothing and gear?
Lise Wortley explains the need for meticulous preparation, physical training focused on endurance, and the unique challenges of moving in heavy period clothing, including dealing with water-filled leather boots and a dress that can hinder mobility, all while trying to recreate the historical experience as faithfully as possible.
The Lost Franklin Expedition: What Really Happened?
Q: It is one of the great seafaring mysteries. Perhaps you could tell us, out of all the things that you could have done, why you've chosen to become the world's expert on the Franklin expedition.
The host asks why the guest devoted decades to Franklin; the guest explains that fascination started from a personal encounter with a folk ballad about Lord Franklin, which led him to explore the historical record, libraries, and archival material that revealed a complex web of exploration ambition, leadership decisions, and the harsh realities of polar travel.
Navigating the Grand Canyon Like It's 1869: John Wesley Powell
Q: How did Powell assemble his crew, and why were mountain men chosen over military men?
Powell preferred rugged, resourceful individuals who could endure long periods of hardship and operate with independence; their experience in survival and the West's harsh conditions was seen as essential for navigating unknown river terrain.
Navigating the Grand Canyon Like It's 1869: John Wesley Powell
Q: What drew Powell to map and study the Grand Canyon after the Civil War?
Powell saw the West as an area needing scientific definition, and his background in geology made him want to interpret the earth's history as exposed in the canyon walls, turning exploration into a chronological science.
Solo to the North Pole: Pen Hadow
Q: Tell us about your first venture into the Arctic.
Pen recounts meeting an experienced radio operator who invited him on a pioneering Svalbard expedition, which became the catalyst for his Arctic career and the later decision to attempt the solo crossing.
